        Untitled signed and dated 1988 (lower left) oil on canvas 28 1/2" x 20 1/2" (72 cm x 52 cm)   Prudencio Lamarroza’s magical landscapes derive their beauty from the memory of the artist’s childhood in Ambalayat, Ilocos Sur. With some of Lamarroza’s earliest memories at the banks of Rivers Chico and Amburayan, water, trees, and smooth rocks find themselves within his canvases. The elements of nature are exalted in his works, made magical and almost otherworldly through his usage of unnatural colors and majestic shapes. With this 1988 work, Lamarroza depicts a rock-filled river shore. The shadows of the distant mountains are evident on the horizon and the focal point of the piece is the rocks, colored gray, red, and blue in an overwhelming amount, almost to the point of covering the sands of the banks. This image is both nostalgic and majestic – there is familiarity in this piece and yet it seems almost impossible and otherworldly in its composition. This work, like many in Lamarroza’s oeuvre, overflows with nostalgia. He creates an intimate vision, elevating it to a magical extent (Hannah Valiente)

His paintings are not studied in terms of natural objects and relations between objects. He looks beyond nature’s apparent chaos — a rich descriptive quality is perceived, even when the subject is purely imaginary. He paints what he sees, but he chooses what to see. The artist is known for his ideal forms of nature. A lengthy tradition of landscape painting runs through his career, and the evolution of his own style was the result of a gradual process – a logical and steady development, marked by abundant insights. As described in the monograph Prudencio Lamarroza: His Life and Art written by Manuel Duldulao: “The lines of the boughs, branches, and twigs, and even the untidy invasiveness of rampaging nature, are transposed to lines proper to art, lines echoing the borders of the canvas itself. The images we see are not of fields or rocks or trees, but of paint on canvas, a vibrant massing of paint with a life of its own.” (P.I.R.)
