Landscape signed and dated 1981 (bottom) oil on canvas 44" x 24" (112 cm x 61 cm) WRITE UP: The 1980 Mobil Art Award is a veritable who’s who in the Philippine art scene: the Philippine greats like Ang Kiukok, Jose Joya, Danny Dalena, and Onib Olmedo, among others, went toeto-toe in a “first-of-a-kind event” as described by critic and Mobil Arts Award jury Alice Guillermo in her book The 1980 Mobil Art Awards. In the same book, she listed four artists as “Artists Beyond Categories” with one of the artists mentioned being Prudencio Lamarroza. Prudencio Lamarroza’s striking works are all incredibly his own; he utilizes colors, rhythm, and texture and spins them to create radical and unique pieces. He draws from his vibrant childhood: growing up in Ambalayat, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Lamarozza spent his childhood frolicking the banks of the Chico and Amburayan Rivers. Here, he found different sorts of stones – gray and smoothed out by the raging currents that, when polished by a wet cloth, glistened like gemstones under the vibrant sun. This whimsical piece in turn is a love letter to his alluring childhood; it is an amalgamation of his boyhood in Tagudin. The rocks that are central to his artistic growth are clustered on the ground; the background as well as the foliage of the tree on the center of the canvas shows a river reminiscent of the Chico and Amburayan Rivers that Lamarroza played in as a child. “Lamarroza’s sense of art…is anchored in the past,” writes Manuel D. Duldulao in Prudencio Lamarroza: His Life and Art. “Art is invention, but it is also remembering. ”(Hannah Valiente)

        Prudencio Lamarroza (b.1946) - Untitled

        Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Untitled signed (bottom and verso) oil on canvas 24” x 36” (60 cm x 91 cm) WRITE UPIn this vibrant and whimsical painting created by Prudencio Lamarroza, the viewer is transported to a fantastical landscape that bursts with color and charm. The atmosphere is imbued with a sense of wonder and adventure, inviting you to step into this enchanting wonderland and leave behind the worries of the everyday world. Here, we can observe that Lamarroza is indeed an artist of substance whose work is infused with imagination. His childhood memories inspire him to paint and serve as images stored in the cellar of his mind. For instance, his landscape paintings transcend the mere representation of nature. His landscape paintings are not seen in terms of rocks or trees, but of paint on canvas — a vibrant massing of paint with a life of its own. Furthermore, what makes his works one of a kind is his use of color. His approach is always intuitive, as he never adhered to theories about color. Also, unknown to many, he has an imbalanced response to color, weak in red and green but intensely sensitive to yellow and blue. On the bright side, it allowed him to study the works of his predecessors in a different light. In the end, Lamarroza did not let this affect his art. “If there is an absolute originality in Lamarroza, it lies in his gift of pure color,” wrote Manuel Duldulao in Prudencio Lamarroza: His Life and Art. His childhood memories inspire him to paint and serve as images stored in the cellar of his mind. And so, even when the subject is purely imaginary, his canvas conveys a lot of descriptive quality. For instance, his landscape paintings have nothing to do with the experience of looking at nature. His landscape paintings are not seen in terms of rocks or trees, but of paint on canvas — a vibrant massing of paint with a life of its own. Furthermore, what makes his works one of a kind is his use of color. Colors exude the artist’s emotions that his subject awakened in him, and this can be observed in his portraits of women. An article by Angel de Jesus said: “What draws the attention are their eyes, which seem to follow the viewer everywhere...They look alive and re-enforce the colors to give the paintings the vitality of life.” His approach is always intuitive as he never adhered to theories about color. Also, unknown to many, he has an imbalanced response to color, weak in red and green but intensely sensitive to yellow and blue. On the bright side, it allowed him to study the works of his predecessors in a different light. In the end, Lamarroza did not let this affect his art. “If there is an absolute originality in Lamarroza, it lies in his gift of pure color,” wrote Manuel Duldulao in his book titled Prudencio Lamarroza: His Life and Art. Prudencio Lamarroza (b. 1946) Amburayan River in the Mind

        Est: ₱60,000 - ₱78,000

Amburayan River in the Mind signed (lower center) oil on canvas 18 1/2" x 16" (47 cm x 41 cm) PROVENANCE: Paul Zafaralla collection The Amburayan River casts a spell on all who cross it. A river on the northern island of Luzon, it serves as the boundary between La Union and Ilocos Sur, the province of Prudencio Lamarroza. In 1946, he was born into a family of rice millers at Ambalayat, a barrio of Tagudin town. As a child, he enjoyed long walks among the rocks, picking the pebbles that caught his attention. He was, and still is, fascinated by the beauty of stones. And, so was the Amburayan River for Lamarroza. Amburayan River in the Mind recalls the artist’s youthful memories – the blue hues of the sky that are reflected on the waters, the trees that bend to touch the banks, and the stones that seem to glow under the sun’s glare. Prudencio Lamarroza (b. 1946) - Diwata of the Blue Mountain

        Est: ₱120,000 - ₱156,000

Diwata of the Blue Mountain signed (upper right) and dated 1997 (verso) oil and acrylic on canvas 30" x 40" (76 cm x 102 cm) EXHIBITED Art Venue Gallery, Boundless Realms, Mandaluyong City, 1998 In 1998, Prudencio Lamarroza mounted a solo exhibition at the Art Venue Gallery in Mandaluyong titled Boundless Realms. Among the works showcased in the show was Diwata of the Blue Mountain. Here, the diwata is as legendary as its fabled existence in the Filipino folk tradition. In Philippine mythology, the diwata is a breathtakingly beautiful woman who acts as the guardian spirit of forests and mountains. Inherently benevolent unless provoked by human greed, the diwata is the native archetypal image of Mother Earth. Emmanuel Torres writes in the exhibition catalog: "Queen or diwata, she represents a time when mankind was inextricably bonded to nature and the myths that pay homage to her largesse." The diwata is a recurring subject in Lamarroza's oeuvre. She is always shown at close range in the artist's works, emphasizing her head and upper torso. She is set against a backdrop of a mountain landscape, symbolizing her spiritual custody over the natural world. Lamarroza's diwata is rendered as a dignified, full-bodied figure, indicating her crucial role in nurturing and safeguarding her dominion and those who depend on its blessings for survival.

His signature use of a whimsical yet controlled technicolor palette is a gift and a talent that only a few artists can rightfully claim they’ve achieved. Each element of his work is meticulously directed in order to bring out a surrealist landscape that still contains within it a sense of familiarity and reality. Lamarozza enrolled in University of Santo Tomas’ Fine Arts program where he found himself under the tutelage of a number of acclaimed artists such as Diosdado Lorenzo, Victorio Edades, and Angelito Antonio. His magical landscapes are imbued with a timeless sensibility, freeing it from the constraints of trends, tradition, and time. As an artist, Lamarozza can be viewed as one of the most original voices of his generation, with works that will undoubtedly stand the test of time and criticism

His signature use of a whimsical yet controlled technicolor palette is a gift and a talent that only a few artists can rightfully claim they’ve achieved. Each element of his work is meticulously directed in order to bring out a surrealist landscape that still contains within it a sense of familiarity and reality. In this particular untitled piece, Lamarroza takes a relatively subtler approach compared to his other more vivid landscapes. Cool hues of grey, blue, green, and purple, dominate Lamarroza’s enchanting surrealist landscape, showing us that Lamarroza’s artistic practice is not only hinged upon his use of bright and pastel colors. This controlled approach by the veteran artist is carefully complemented by splashes of natural yellow, effectively bringing the piece into a cohesive whole.

His signature use of a whimsical yet controlled technicolor palette is a gift and a talent that only a few artists can rightfully claim they’ve achieved. Each element of his work is meticulously directed in order to bring out a surrealist landscape that still contains within it a sense of familiarity and reality. Born in 1946, Lamarozza during his formative years. So much so that the young Prudencio would skip his studies to admire, and even sketch, the Chico and Amburayan rivers that flanked his village.
