      § HENRY LAMB (BRITISH, 1883-1960)

§ HENRY LAMB (BRITISH, 1883-1960) HENRY LAMB (BRITISH, 1883-1960) Gun Crew oil on panel 81.5 x 77.5 cm. (32 x 30 1/2 in.) Painted in 1944 Provenance The artist, thence by family descent Henry Lamb was born in 1883 in Adelaide, Australia, the son of Professor Horace Lamb and his wife, Mary, and one of seven children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to England, where his father accepted a position at the University of Manchester, and Lamb was subsequently raised in Manchester. Although he initially pursued medical training in Manchester and at Guy’s Hospital, he left the profession in 1905 to focus on art. However, with the outbreak of World War I, Lamb returned to medicine, serving as a surgeon in Macedonia and Palestine. After the war, he was appointed an Official War Artist and created the monumental Irish Troops in the Judean Hills Surprised by a Turkish Bombardment (1919), now in the Imperial War Museum—a significant work that complements Stanley Spencer’s Travoys Arriving with Wounded Soldiers (1919) in capturing the harrowing experiences of war. During World War I, Henry Lamb served on the front lines and, after being demobilized, was commissioned to capture the conflict through his art. This led to iconic works like Irish Troops in the Judaean Hills Surprised by a Turkish Bombardment (1919), now housed in the Imperial War Museum. By the time World War II erupted, Lamb, at 57, was appointed a full-time war artist by the War Artists' Advisory Committee. In this role, he produced over 100 paintings and drawings, including striking portraits of servicemen and evocative scenes of the domestic war effort. The current piece showcases a gun crew loading shells into an anti-aircraft battery, the type of which defended Britain’s southern counties. A smaller version of this composition is part of York Art Gallery’s collection. REWORD

Henry Lamb RA,  Australian/British 1883-1960 -  Portrait of a Man, c.1911-12;  oil on canvas, 51 x 40.5 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  Richard Carline (1896-1980);  Christie's, London, Modern British and Irish, Paintings Drawings and Sculpture,12th June 1981, lot 59;  Sotheby's, London, Modern British and Irish Paintings, Drawings, 8th March 1995, lot 24;  private collection  Note:  Richard Carline was an artist and the brother-in-law of Stanley Spencer. According to the inscription on the reverse of the work and Christie's cataloguing from his estate sale, he believed this painting was a portrait of the artist Boris Anrep (1883-1969) and there is a striking resemblance. Anrep was known for his mosaics, particularly for the National Gallery in London. A later portrait of Anrep by Henry Lamb is now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 'Boris Anrep and His Family, 1931'.

(British/Australian 1883-1960) The Scotch Lady (Elizabeth Jameson), 1908 signed and dated (lower right) oil on canvas (200cm x 100cm (78 1/4in x 39in)) Provenance Christie's London, British and Irish Modernist and Contemporary Paintings. 8 June 1990, lot 244, as 'Portrait of a Lady, Full Length, in a Blue Dress' Private collection, Scotland Literature Anthony Powell, Keith Clements and Sandra Martin, Henry Lamb 1883-1960, Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester, 1984, p. 10 Keith Clements, Henry Lamb: The Artist and his Friends, Redcliffe Press Ltd, Bristol, 1985, pp.75-76 Henry Lamb affectionately referred to the subject of this important and early portrait as his ‘Scotch Lady’. He painted the glamorous Mrs Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Jameson, wife of the solicitor John ‘Harry’ Jameson, in November 1908, whilst staying with them at 8 Doune Terrace in Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town. This was an exciting time for Lamb, personally and professionally, as he emerged as an artist of promise within London’s art world and developed friendships with Augustus John, Vanessa Bell, Lytton Strachey and other members of the Bloomsbury Group. Lamb was born in Adelaide, Australia but grew up in Manchester. He studied Medicine at what is now known as the University of Manchester but gave up his course to enrol at Chelsea Art School in London in 1906. John was one of his tutors and his influence can be felt in the fluidity of Mrs Jameson’s full-length, confident pose. Lamb joined John and his entourage in Paris in 1907 and attended L’Ecole de la Palette in Montparnasse. His exhibiting career began with the New English Art Club and Allied Artists Association in 1905 and 1908 respectively. Whilst in Paris, Lamb met the Russian artist Boris Anrep (1883-1969), who became one of his closest friends, as well as the music student Helen Maitland (1885-1965). She was a distant cousin of Elizabeth Jameson and this relationship presumably resulted in the portrait commission which brought Lamb to the Scottish capital in 1908. According to Lamb’s biographer Keith Clements, Anrep attended Edinburgh College of Art over that winter, under the Directorship of Frank Morley-Fletcher (1866-1949). Keith Clements has written about the current portrait thus: ‘Sittings began early in the November of 1908 with numerous studies in pencil and watercolour from which eventually the painting had to be completed because of the changing appearance of his ‘Scotch lady’, as Henry referred to her: Elizabeth Jamieson [sic] was pregnant at the time and whilst posing tried to disguise her condition with the folds of an ‘Empire Line’ dress; but in the finished picture she appears ‘wasp-waisted’ and typically Edwardian. The portrait of Mrs Jamieson is one of the artist’s earliest surviving oils and surely his largest – over six feet in height…younger generations of Jamiesons [sic]…remember how well and warmly Henry Lamb was always spoken of by his sitter, even in old age – she lived to be ninety-four.’ (Keith Clements, Henry Lamb: The Artist and his Friends, Redcliffe Press Ltd, Bristol 1985, p.75-76.) Indeed, the rapport between artist and subject is clear in The Scotch Lady. Jameson regards Lamb directly, with her head tilted to one side. This gesture is paralleled in the bend of her elbow and flow of her dress to the right, providing rhythm throughout the image. Lamb revels in her elegance, with particularly sensitive passages in the depiction of the area around her collar bone and the hand placed discreetly above the swell of her pregnancy. Jameson’s only adornments are her two rings, her only accompaniments the Bonsai tree set atop a sewing table. The contrasting textures of her gown provide colour fields to join those of the background and floor, in a strikingly simplified composition. As such, what appears to be a relatively ‘traditional’ society portrait contains flashes of modernity and hints of post-Impressionism. Lamb returned to medicine during World War One service and thereafter made his name as a one of Britain’s leading twentieth-century portraitists. He became a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery and Tate and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1940, twenty years before his death.

Henry Lamb RA (1883-1960) Henry Lamb RA (1883-1960) Portrait of Carl Eric Bechhofer Roberts (1894-1949) oil on canvas 40.8 x 30.5cm Provenance: Carl Eric Bechhofer Roberts. Illustrated: Albert Rutherston, Henry Lamb, London: Ernest Benn Ltd, 1924, plate 18. This lot will be sold with a copy of the book. C E Bechhofer Roberts was a widely published English author and journalist. He was an early patron of Henry Lamb and owned several other works including 'A Bristol Committee', 1921 and 'Feeding Calves', 1921. His portrait is among a number of contemporary men of letters who sat for Lamb, including Lytton Strachey, Thomas Hardy and Evelyn Waugh. Bechhofer Roberts was born in London and studied Classics at Berlin University. At the end of the First World War, he worked with H G Wells at the Information Department. He travelled extensively in Russia, encountering Grigori Rasputin in St. Petersburg, who kissed him, and the mystic philosopher George Gurdjieff (1866-1949), whose work he introduced to an English audience. Bechhofer published 'Russia at the Crossroads' in 1916. He returned to Russia as part of the British Military Mission and was London Times correspondent, covering the Russian famine in 1921, the year he published his book, 'Through Starving Russia'. He went on to act as private secretary to Lord Birkenhead, 1924-1930. He was the first biographer of Winston Churchill, 1927. He also published lives of Madame Blavatsky, 1931, Stanley Baldwin, 1936, and Paul Verlaine, 1937. His book, 'This Side Idolatry', 1928, caused a scandal for its salacious revelations about the private life of Charles Dickens and his mistress. He also published under the pseudonyms, 'Ephesian' and 'Arthur Milton'. He edited The Old Bailey Trial series and wrote extensively on some of the more lurid criminal cases of the day, such as the trial of William Joyce (Lord Haw Haw). Bechhofer uncovered fraudulent mediums in 'The Truth about Spiritualism', 1932, and among his works of fiction is a hilarious gangster spoof, 'Don Chicago, or Crime Don't Pay', 1933. Bechhofer's books were recommended by George Orwell. The present lot is to be sold with a selection of essays, fiction and non-fiction books written by C E Bechhofer Roberts, to include his biographies of Stanley Baldwin and Lord Birkenhead, amongst others titled 'Don Chicago', 'Let'st Begin Again', 'The Mysterious Madame' and more. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

There is a gentle atmosphere to the scene, with the dramatic translated into the colloquial; for Spencer the divine existed in the everyday. It is remarkable that the painting was first owned by the artist Henry Lamb, who was a friend and patron of Spencer and the pair had met in 1913. Both artists Lamb and Stanley Spencer joined the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War and were stationed at times in Macedonia. Spencer's masterpiece and perhaps most famous work, 'The Resurrection, Cookham, 1924–27' (Tate Gallery) was made in a studio borrowed from Lamb in 1922, suggesting why he owned the present work. There is a label on the reverse of the board with Spencer's note of the painting, which reads, 'Small Study for the Resurrection. In this I discover the meaning of the people leaning on head-stones'. Spencer would return to the theme repeatedly in his career, most notably in the major composition 'The Resurrection of Soldiers', 1928-29' for Burghclere Chapel. Other key examples include 'The Resurrection, Cookham, 1924–27' (Tate Galleries), 'The Resurrection of the Good and Bay, 1915' and Port Glasgow Resurrection, 1947-50' (Tate Galleries). § Henry Lamb MC, RA (British 1883-1960) Study of a Breton man pencil 24 x 17cm Footnote: Provenance: Hubert Faure, London The present lot probably dates from between 1910 and 1911 during the period when Henry Lamb is known to have stayed with the Favenac family in Pont-Aven, a commune on the Southern Coast of Brittany most closely associated with Paul Gaugin. Lamb, like many artists during the late 19th and early 20th century, was attracted to the rugged Brittany coast as a primitive antithesis to the over-crowded, and apparently sophisticated, cities. Although Lamb is known to have stayed with the Favenacs in 1909, his earliest surviving Breton drawings date from 1910.

§ Henry Lamb, MC, RA (British, 1883-1960) Portrait of David McKenna (1911-2003), seated at a clavichord signed and dated 'Lamb 35' (lower right); artist's label to the reverse oil on canvas h:80 w:90 cm Provenance: David McKenna and by family descent Exhibited: The Royal Academy Exhibition, cat.no.1053 (date untraced) Other Notes: David McKenna was born in London to a family with strong connections to both the political and artistic worlds of Edwardian Britain. His father was the Liberal MP, Reginald McKenna, then First Lord of the Admiralty and later Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under Herbert Asquith. He was also close friends with the architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens. His mother, Pamela Jekyll, was the daughter of the wtiter and artist, Agnes Graham, who was muse of Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones in 1876. She was also the niece of garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll. McKenna studied at Eton and he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read Engineering and Mathematics. In 1934 he joined the London Passenger Transport Board as assistant to the director, and this began a highly successful career in the transport sector. He became Assistant General Manager of the Southern Region of British Railways in 1955, eventually succeeding to chairman and general manager of the Southern Region. The Victoria line on the London underground is largely credited to McKenna. The present portrait was painted a year after his marriage to Lady Cecilia Keppel, daughter of the 9th Earl of Albemarle. Henry Lamb was a close friend of the family and this is most probably the reason why Lamb has captured, so well, his friend's likeable character in the portrait. It also demonstrates McKenna's love of music. He was a member of the Bach Choir, sang Purcell to A J Balfour on his deathbed, was chairman of the Sadler's Well Trust and vice-president of the Royal College of Music.

§ Henry Lamb, MC, RA (British, 1883-1960) Portrait of Myee Miranda Mckenna, 1947 crayon and chalk drawing

      Est: £3,000 - £5,000

§ Henry Lamb, MC, RA (British, 1883-1960) Portrait of Myee Miranda Mckenna, 1947 crayon and chalk drawing h:30 w:22 cm Provenance: Collection of the artist's widow, Lady Pansy Lamb New Grafton Gallery, London, where acquired by the present owner (label verso) Other Notes: Myee Miranda McKenna (1935-2019) was the eldest daughter of Mr David and Lady Cecilia McKenna. As well as painting her father (lot 236), Henry Lamb drew their daughter on at least two occasions. The fact that this drawing was kept by the artist, and then, after his death, remained in the possession of his widow, Lady Pansy Lamb, demonstrates the close friendship which existed between the two families.
