The drawing was made in Normandy to which the Lamb's had visited. Lamb wanted to make drawings of the town of which 'Madam Bovary' is cited. He made a series of lithographs for a time edition of that novel - but all came to nothing owing to the outbreak of war. Lamb was deeply interested in French painting and literature.
