AND JAMES LAMBERT JNR. 1725-1788, 1742-1799 AN ALBUM OF VIEWS AND PLANS OF HERSTMONCEUX CASTLE, SUSSEX measurements note 39.5 by 63.5 cm., 15 1/2 by 25 in. including the Ground Plan, the Second Story, the Southwest View, the Southeast View, the North Front, the Porter's Lodge, the South View and North View of the Green Court, the Chicken Court, the Pump Court, the Butler's Pantry Court, the Kitchen, the Chapel, the Hall, and the Chicken Court with modern Dairy-House of Herstmonceux Castle. fifteen, signed fourteen times with variations of: Ja,s Lambert Lewes Del.t 1776; Ja,s Lambert Junr, Delt /1776; dated between 1776 and 1777; inscribed variously, with a preface quoting an extract from a survey book: made in the time of Gregory Fynes Lord Dacre of his manors in Sussex, in the posession of the Reverend Mr. Hare of Herstmonceux each watercolour over pencil on laid paper, some pages watermarked WHATMAN, an album, bound in brown calf boards with gilt tooling NOTE Herstmonceux Castle is located in East Sussex near Hailsham. The extract inscribed in the early pages of the album, which is taken from a survey book, describes the house in detail: The Manor House of Herstmonceux standeth on the East side of the Church at Herstmonceux...The House being Castle-like builded Quadrant everyway containing two hundred feet in length and as much in breadth...My Lord's Arms fairly set forth in stone on the Front over the Entering...the same Gate and Towers have port -holes emboed under the embattlement for casting stones and other defensive Engines...The Watch-Towers wasted of great length with violence of wind and weather, needful to be seen unto.
