          Maurice Prosper Lambert RA, British 1901-1964 - The Parachute, 1919;

          Est: £1,000 - £1,500

          Maurice Prosper Lambert RA, British 1901-1964 - The Parachute, 1919; watercolour and ink on paper, signed and titled lower right 'M. P. Lambert The Parachute' and dedicated and dated lower left 'to Penelope Spencer June 9th 1919', 54.8 x 37 cm (ARR) Note: with thanks to Vanessa Nicolson, author of 'The sculpture of Maurice Lambert', for her assistance in the cataloguing of this work. This early work by the artist was made while Lambert was training in the studio of sculptor Francis Derwent Wood (1871-1926) and working with his father George Washington Lambert (1873-1930). Vanessa Nicolson has noted how the angular, cartoonish style of the present work is characteristic of his work of this period. The subject matter and flattened, complex composition were clearly influenced by the Futurist and Vorticist movements of the WWI period. Penelope Spencer was a celebrated ballerina, and there is a lithograph depicting the pair by Thea Proctor in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Spencer was a lifelong friend of Lambert's brother, the composer Constant Lambert (1905-1951), who famously painted by Christopher Wood. Please refer to department for condition report

          Maurice Lambert RA (1901-1964) AENGUS AND THE BIRDS - THE LADY GREGORY MEDAL FOR THE IRISH ACADEMY OF LETTERS, 1934

          Est: €2,000 - €3,000

          Maurice Lambert RA (1901-1964) AENGUS AND THE BIRDS - THE LADY GREGORY MEDAL FOR THE IRISH ACADEMY OF LETTERS, 1934 cast bronze art medal; (from a limited edition of 17) signed in monogram "ML" lower right; with 'Irish Academy of Letters' on reverse h:3  w:3 in. Exhibited: 'Maurice Lambert', Lefevre Gallery, London, May 1934 Commissioned by W. B. Yeats on behalf of the Irish Academy of Letters, February 1934. W. B. Yeats commissioned this medal “to be awarded at rare intervals to the best Irish book of the year” [1]. He sought to raise the necessary funds for the commission whilst on a North American lecture tour in 1933 and by December of that year had been promised £200 for the project, mostly from Judge R. Campbell and Patrick McCartan. After canvassing a number of artists “of international reputation”, he selected the English sculptor Maurice Lambert to carry out the commission; “he is exactly what I wanted and he is still inexpensive”.[2] Letters between Yeats and Lambert in the National Library of Ireland reveal that Lambert chose the subject Aengus and the Birds, but that Yeats interpreted the image as being symbolic of “Inspiration” and “Genius”. Yeats was very pleased with the final work, deeming it “a beautiful design”. In November 1934 he wrote to tell McCartan: “Lambert has now finished the Academy Medal. (Fifteen medals are in the charge of the Bank of Ireland placed there by the Academy). It is an admirable thing. It is to be presented once every three years, irrespective of age... Owing to the fact that it is cast like the old medals, not struck from a die, no more copies can be made than these 15, and one given to me by the sculptor, and one purchased from the Mint (a great compliment)”[3]. The award became known as the Lady Gregory Medal. The first three were awarded to George Russell ‘AE’, George Bernard Shaw, and to Yeats himself. With sincere thanks to Dr. Declan Kiely of the Berg Collection, New York Public Library, and to Prof. Roy Foster, Oxford University, for their generous assistance in cataloguing this item. 1 W. B. Yeats to Judge R. Campbell, circa 20 January 1933 (NLI) 2 W. B. Yeats to Patrick McCartan, 16 February 1934 (NLI) 3 W. B. Yeats to Patrick McCartan, 30 November 1934 (NLI)

          Maurice Lambert (Fr., 1901-1964), Untitled

          Est: $1,000 - $3,000

          Maurice Lambert (Fr., 1901-1964), Untitled burnished bronze on a carved stone plinth signed "ML." HOA 24 3/8 in. Born in Paris, Lambert was educated and served apprenticeships in London. He assisted F. Derwent Wood in completing the machine-gun corps memorial at Hyde Park Corner. Lambert went on to have a successful career as as a sculptor, exhibiting works in fine commercial galleries, Tate Gallery, and the Royal Academy. This bronze may be related to Lambert's bird series and bears similarities to "Golden Pheasant," circa 1932, which was purchased in 2001 by the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide (The Sculpture of Maurice Lambert by Vanessa Nicholson, illustrated plate 2, catalogue number 102). Daughter of Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical founder, Robert Wood Johnson, Evangeline Brewster Johnson Merrill was a prominent supporter of the arts at a very early point in her life. In 1943, she was made a Fellow in Perpetuity of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; throughout her life she was a patron of several museums, including the Peabody Museum of Yale University. Her philosophy and passion for art is well defined in a letter to a family member dated January 20, 1970, in which she seeks support for The Norton Gallery, "Art, together with Science, constitutes the highest form of human evolution, and I think you will agree that their preservation and development become a most important civic responsibility of us all. Museums preserve the inspired art of the past and the challenging art of the present in order to stimulate and enlarge our culture pattern." Evangeline was particularly interested in promoting contemporary artists, encountering many throughout her travels and work with the United Nations. She had a particular interest in Middle Eastern and Continental artists, as illustrated in the collection offered here. She lived with her collection, sharing it with others while entertaining at her home. Numerous works from her collection, by such important artists as Klee and Kandinsky, are in the collections of MOMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Estate of the Late Evangeline Brewster Johnson Merrill and by descent to the consignor Some minor flaking to plinth; some minor abrasions to bronze.
