Oil Painting ‘Asian Ox Cart’, around 1936

        Est: €90 - €600

Oil on canvas Asia, around 1930 Marked by another hand on verso ‘Peter-Martin Lampel PML’ Peter Martin Lampel (actually Joachim Friedrich Martin, 1894-1965) – German painter from Hamburg Also marked on verso ‘Sarkap (?) Socracarto’ 36.5 x 46.5 cm Good condition This oil painting is executed exclusively in green and blue. It shows an ox cart in a thick forest. The cart is separated from the background through the artist’s use of a thick layer of colour. The elements are only indicated. Perspective and colour are witness to high quality artistry. There is a label on the wood frame on verso – ‘Peter-Martin Lampel PML’ and another illegible inscription ‘Sarkap (or Jarkap) Socracarto’. The painting is unsigned and carries no monogram, but the Asian motif speaks for Lampel as being the artist. The piece measures 36.5 x 46.5 cm. The wood frame measures 30 x 40 cm. The painting is in good condition with slight age-related signs of wear. The lower half of the painting shows colour flaking. The gold frame has a texture; shows minimal colour flaking. Peter Martin Lampel (1894-1965) Peter Martin Lampel’s real name is Jaochim Friedrich Martin. He was born 1894 near Liegnitz (Legnica today) in Silesia. He was an officer of the Luftwaffe during WWI. He was a student of Peter Halm and Carl von Marr at the Munich Academy of Arts. Under national socialist rule, Lampel, who also worked as an author, was forbidden to exhibit his works. He was arrested in 1936, fled to Java upon his release - via Switzerland, Austria and former Yugoslavia. He then went to Bali and Indonesia, then Australia. He went to the US in 1939. He returned to Germany in 1949. Lampel died 1965 in Hamburg. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
