Comme vingt et un ans plus tôt avec la révolutionnaire « Traction avant », Citroën stupéfia de nouveau le monde en octobre 1955 en lançant la très spectaculaire DS 19. Sous une carrosserie aux lignes dictées par l'efficacité aérodynamique aux allures de requin, la nouvelle venue offrait une suspension hydropneumatique à quatre roues indépendantes et correction d'assiette et des commandes de freins, d'embrayage automatique, de boîte de vitesses et une direction assistées par un circuit hydraulique à très haute pression. Aucune automobile européenne ne fut en mesure pendant des années d'égaler le comportement dynamique de la DS. La qualité fondamentale de la suspension hydropneumatique d'avant-garde proposée par Citroën se trouve encore démontrée par sa survivance sur les modèles haut de gamme de la marque. Le moteur d'origine à culbuteurs de 1,911 cm3 de la DS, à longue course, fit place en 1966 à un groupe à course courte de 1,985 cm3 également disponible en versions 2,175 et 2, 347 cm3, la DS recevant ensuite divers perfectionnements tels que des phares pivotants, l'injection d'essence et une boîte à cinq rapports. Lorsque la production fut arrêtée en 1975, plus de 1,3 million de ces voitures aux caractéristiques si originales avaient été produites. D'autres modèles furent dérivés de la DS originale tels que l'ID (une version simplifiée moins chère), l'immense Break (Safari) et le Cabriolet (décapotable deux portes quatre places). Une des voitures les plus élégantes des années 1960, cette dernière était une création du carrossier parisien Henri Chapron qui nomma son premier modèle « La Croisette ». Initialement, cette variante ne fut pas approuvée par Citroën et le carrossier dut acheter des voitures complètes au lieu de plates-formes équipées, mais le constructeur se ravisa et fit produire ses propres versions « usine » sur le châssis long et renforcé de l'ID Break. Chapron poursuivit la construction de ses propres cabriolets Le Caddy et le Palm Beach ainsi que des limousines et des coupés hors série, le plus apprécié étant «Le Dandy». Livré neuf en France, ce superbe exemplaire d'une des rares Citroën produites par Chapron a été totalement restaurée selon ses spécifications d'origine entre 2007 et 2012 (factures disponibles) après son achat par le quatrième et actuel propriétaire en 2006. Les travaux ont porté sur une réfection du moteur « à neuf », la restauration de la carrosserie à partir d'éléments neufs, le regarnissage de l'intérieur en cuir de la teinte d'origine et la réfection de la transmission et des systèmes électriques. Offerte avec ses papiers d'immatriculation allemands, elle est accompagnée d'un manuel d'origine de DS Cabriolet et des copies des deux cartes grises précédentes. 1962 Citroën DS19 Décapotable Coachwork by Henri Chapron Chassis no. to be advised Engine no. to be advised Just as it had done 21 years previously with the revolutionary 'Traction Avant', Citroën stunned the world again in 1955 with the launch of the strikingly styled 'DS'. The newcomer's startling appearance had been determined by the requirements of aerodynamic efficiency, while beneath the shark-like, low-drag bodyshell there was all-independent, self-levelling, hydro-pneumatic suspension plus power-operated brakes, clutch and steering. No European car would match the DS's ride quality for several years, and the fundamental soundness of Citroën's ahead-of-its-time hydro-pneumatic suspension is demonstrated by its survival in present-day top-of-the-range models. In 1966 the DS's original 1,911cc, overhead-valve, long-stroke engine was replaced by a short-stroke 1,985cc unit, also available in 2,175cc and 2,347cc versions, while other developments included swivelling headlights, fuel injection and a five-speed gearbox. Other models offered alongside the original DS were the ID (a simplified, cheaper version), the cavernous Safari estate and the two-door Décapotable (convertible). One of the most stylish cars of the 1960s, the latter was the creation of Parisian coachbuilder, Henri Chapron, who called his first such model 'La Croisette'. At first the conversion was not approved by Citroën, forcing Chapron to buy complete cars rather than rolling chassis, but eventually the factory relented and went on to produce its own usine version on the longer chassis of the ID Break (estate) model. Chapron continued to build his own Le Caddy and Palm Beach convertibles together with various limousines and coupés, the most popular of the latter being 'Le Dandy'. Delivered new in France, this beautiful example of one of Chapron's rare coachbuilt Citroëns was completely restored to original specification between 2007 and 2012 (invoices available) having been purchased by the current (fourth) owner in 2006. Works carried out include rebuilding the engine to 'as new' condition; restoring the body using new panels; re-trimmed the interior with leather of correct original colour; and renewing the transmission and electrics. Offered with German registration papers, it also comes with an original DS Cabriolet handbook and copies of two previous French Cartes Grises.
