Tran Thuy Lan Art for Sale and Sold Prices

b. 1933 - d. 2016

Born in 1933 in Hanoi to a wealthy family, Tran Thuy Lan spent a peaceful childhood in Vietnam. The war forced him to interrupt in the mid-1950s his studies at the Beaux-Arts in Hanoi. Under family pressure, Tran Thuy Lan left the country and moved to France in the early 1960s.

In Paris, the aesthetic shock is immense: he discovers modern Western art, notably Mondrian, then Vasarely and the artists of op'art, widely represented in the galleries of the Latin Quarter at the time.

Despite his passion for painting, now without financial support from his family, he has to make a living differently. In addition to a career in administration, he painted his first works as an autodidact from 1965. His creative energy led him to paint for his own pleasure, without seeking recognition from his peers or seeking to exhibit.

Settled in the 70s in Vernon, he produced most of his work. After a rather figurative period, he moves towards a daring synthetism and then joins the chromatic theories of the artists of the GRAV (Visual Art Research Group).

He derogates from his great discretion only by regularly exhibiting his work at the International Painting Exhibition Deauville until the early 80s.
Unfortunately, serious health problems are gradually forcing him to completely stop painting. He died in 2016 at Versailles at 83 years old.
It can be considered that Tran Thuy Lan is undoubtedly the only artist from South East Asia to date to be considered representative of op'art, a largely international and now very fashionable artistic movement.

All the works presented as part of this exhibition reflect an era and an artist committed to the modernity of his time.
