Fred Lancome, French, 1911-1997, Surging Africa, bronze, Initialed on base "FL", impressed with Foundry mark along backside of base. This work was exhibited as No. 20 at Lancôme's solo exhibition at Selected Artists Gallery, New York City, 1961, and was illustrated on the cover of the exhibition catalog. Note: According to the sculptor's own publication, A Sculptor Speaks to the Onlooker, Canaan Printing, Canaan, CT, Fred Lancome was born in 1911 in Brussels. At eighteen he entered the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied with Frederic Litman. In 1940 he emigrated to the United States, worked for several years with Franc Epping, and for a short while with Bertha Margolies and Nathan Choate. He had many one-person shows and participated in many group shows in museums and galleries in the East, and frequently lectured at schools, colleges and to adult groups. (PFOS5110)(MM)..
