Also included is an in-print signed lithograph by Marius Perret (France, 1853-1900). The Platoon etching is creased. The frames have light wear. Collection Charles Auzoux 1870-1910', Paris, Louvre des Antiquaires, 5 mai - 10 septembre 1995, p. 68, n° XVI-8 Commentaire : Auguste Lançon se distingue dans la seconde partie du XIXe siècle comme un formidable peintre-reporter spécialisé dans les scènes militaires, mais surtout comme un des meilleurs artistes animaliers de son temps. Son art fut fortement influencé par Millet, Corot, Delacroix et surtout Antoine-Louis Barye auquel il vouait une grande admiration et qui lui donna l'envie, par ses sculptures, de s'engager dans la représentation des animaux en peinture. Notre artiste va se focaliser sur l'étude des grands fauves. Obsédé par le traitement des pelages et des attitudes, il libère ses animaux de tout environnement, pour n'en conserver que l'essence même. Charles Auzoux fréquenta peu le peintre, mais il était tout simplement épris de ses toiles et fit l'acquisition d'un fonds très important lors de la vente d'atelier en 1888. L'ensemble que nous présentons à la vente témoigne de cet appétit du collectionneur pour Lançon et ses œuvres. Et en 1923, lorsque le sculpteur suédois Christian Eriksson supplia la veuve de Charles Auzoux de lui vendre les œuvres de Lançon en sa possession, elle refusa poliment en indiquant que jamais de son vivant elle ne cèderait les souvenirs des artistes amis de son époux. Within an ancient glove-like frame.

August Lancon (1836-1887) French painter, printmaker and sculptor. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon and finished his studies in Paris. He became an animal sculptor in admiration for the works of Antoine-Louis Barye. During the Franco-Prussian War he was a sergeant of a battalion. Related to the Paris Commune, he was imprisoned for six months. Upon his release, he changed his name and is now called Auguste Lancon. He became military painter and participates in the Balkan War in 1877. He made several etchings showing scenes of war that he had witnessed. In 1893, the street-Auguste Lancon in Paris is named in tribute. His artist's studio, perfectly preserved, still exists in his birthplace, Saint-Claude, 3 College Street. Offered here is an original etching, Title: Enlevement des glaces au Bois de Boulogne, size: 7.5 x 12.5 inches (image size). This impression on laid paper is from the rare 1884 edition of French Etchers. Plate-signed; not hand-signed. Condition note - image and margin area around image is very good. Edge faults only.
