        Unusual for animated posters, Walt Disney's distributors RKO did not use original animated artwork, but commissioned a poster by the well known French graphic artist Bernard Lancy.  Lancy was a master of his trade, creating a beautiful interpretation of Pinocchio with a limited, very selective range of colours.  The poster paints a gentle image of Pinocchio with its soft, rounded shapes and the impish but friendly look in his eye. Pinocchio, the world's most famous wooden puppet, was originally the creation of Italian writer and social commentator Carlo Collodi, entitled The Adventures of Pinocchio.  The story was initially serialized in the children's section of a Roman newspaper, and following its popularity, became a book in 1883.  When Walt Disney decided to adapt the story to film, Pinocchio had already climbed to widespread fame, but it was the animated character of the naughty wooden boy that truly became embedded in the popular imagination.   Fewer than five of these posters are known to have survived.

        Bernard Lancy was a prolific creator of film posters, and designed the artwork for many notable French and foreign films.  He brilliantly encapsulates the crux of the drama with his close-up portrait of Cary Grant's impassive face, and Joan Fontaine's doubting and fearful eyes.   Suspicion applies Alfred Hitchcock's characteristic motives of suspense and psychological tension to a deteriorating marriage.  A series of bewildering events lead the wife, played by Joan Fontaine, to suspect that her husband, played by Cary Grant, is plotting to kill her.   Less than five of these posters are known to have survived.

        The first full-length animated movie, Snow White was a landmark achievement for Walt Disney, changing the trajectory of possibilities within the medium. It has been noted by the American Film Institute as the greatest American animated film of all time. Here, in the original poster for the French release of the movie, it is interesting to note the subtle differences between the presented figures and how they appear within the film.
