Signed and dated lower left: J.H. Lander / Nov 15 1889 John St. Helier Lander was a well-known and sought-after portrait painter during his lifetime. He added the St. to his name in honor of his birthplace, Saint Helier in the Channel Islands. After training in Paris and at the Royal Academy in London, he returned to Jersey in 1892. He became an art teacher at a Ladies College and set up a studio in St Helier. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Jersey and specialized in portraiture, painting both people from Jersey and many of the leading military figures of the First World War. This portrait of a young girl is impressive for its freshness and closeness to life. Elsie, daughter of James and Esther Cornish, was born on 31st October 1882 in Samares, St Clement, Jersey. She married Henry Le Couteur in 1906.

(24.2 x 14.5cm.) * Provenance: Langlois Auctioneers, St Helier, Jersey, 1992 ** Notes: St Paul's Church in New Street, St Helier, Jersey was built in 1891 on the site of another church of the same name. On Tuesday 29th September 1891 the Dean of Jersey, the Rev. George Orange Balleine (1842-1906) preached the sermon at the opening service. The advertising board shown in the painting announces that the Dean will be returning to preach at the anniversary service. The architect of the new church was Adolphus Cookson Curry (1848-1910). The Sandwich Board man depicted by Lander was reputed to be a local character who was paid a modest sum by the church to advertise its services.

Sold for £2,070. ** Notes: Adolph Cookson Curry was the son of Adolphus Cookson Curry (1848-1910) a Jersey born civil engineer and architect who was responsible for designing some significant buildings in Jersey including the Opera House, Highlands College, Victoria Club, Jersey Ladies College, Midland Bank and St Paul's Church. He was also concerned with the restoration of Mont Orgueil and St Ouen's Manor. John Helier Lander was born in 1868 in Belmont Road, Jersey, the son of a bootmaker. He was apprenticed to a watch-maker at the age of fifteen however his artistic talent was soon recognised and he went to London with an introduction to Sir John Everett Millais. After a year at Calderon's Art School in Hampstead he went to Paris where he studied at Julien's famous atelier under Bouguereau and Fleury. He completed his training after three years at the Royal Academy School, which he left in 1893. Returning to Jersey, Lander took up the position of Art Master at the Ladies College and began to paint portraits of prominent local people. In 1905 he moved to London and became established as a fashionable portrait painter. He secured many commissions, including the Royal Family and many heads of state. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Paris Salon. Lander died in 1944.
