        Attributed to Pierre Joseph Landry (American/Louisiana, 1770-1843), early 19th c., floral relief-carved powder horn, wood plug carved with a moon face, rawhide lanyard, l. 11 1/2 in. Provenance: Gaspar Cusachs, entrepreneur, historian and collector, (1855-1929); The Gaspar Cusachs Collection, loaned to the Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, LA (c. 1909-2016). Note: Pierre Joseph Landry immigrated to Louisiana from France at the age of 15. After serving under General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812, he became a successful sugar planter until he contracted a tubercular infection at the age of 63. During his illness, Landry began carving wood sculptures, which often included wildlife, biblical subjects, and historical figures. This carved powder horn, attributed to Landry, features various elements related to Landry’s style, notably the moonfaced wood plug and carved floral decoration.
