ERNA LANGE "ARIZONA DESERT" OIL ON BOARD

Erna Lange "Arizona Desert" Oil on Board. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Erna Lange became a highly respected female artist in the early 20th century at a time when successful artists of her gender were much in the minority. She attended finishing school in Germany and then enrolled in the National Academy of Design in New York as well as Cooper Union and the Art Students League. She took private lessons from Cecilia Beaux, a much renowned figure painter. From 1924 to 1929, Erna, having received a Chaloner Prize, attended the Academies Colarossi, Grand Chaumiere, Julian, and Billoul in Paris and was a private student of Ferdinand Olivier (1873-1957). However, the circumstances facilitating her studies in Paris, were humiliating for her. The following account appeared in Time Magazine, June 9, 1924: "The polemics, occasioned by the award in 1923 of the John Armstrong Chaloner Paris Art Prize to Miss Erna Lange (Elizabeth, N.J.), re-echoed last week when her belated confession of plagiarism was made public. A year ago Miss Lange's painting, Lament, was alleged to tie strikingly like one called The Lament, by James Williams, English artist, although at the time Miss Lange stoutly maintained that she had never even seen the alleged original. She seems meanwhile to have recalled that she did see it, and upon her admission Mr. Chaloner has magnanimously come forward with the announcement that he will give her a prize of $6,000 anyway, so that she may study in Paris along with this year's winner, Miss Martina Speere (Waterbury, Conn.). Said Miss Lange: 'Mr. Chaloner, who very kindly has acted as my counsel in this trying matter during the year 1924, has advised me to plead guilty. I therefore do so. I am very, very sorry, and I have suffered severely. I therefore ask the public to please try to forget the past and look at my work in Paris during the next five years as the proof of my sincere devotion to Art.' " Returning to the United States, she settled for a decade in Elizabeth. In 1930 and 1932, she traveled in the West, spending a winter with the Papago Indians in southern Arizona on the San Xavier del Bac Reservation. She went back to the East and took more classes at the Art Students League and spent several summers at Woodstock, New York. In 1940, Erna moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she remained the rest of her life, marrying John Babick in 1943, and dying in 1984. She had a studio from which she taught classes for many years, and her personal goal was to paint in all parts of the state. She succeeded and was prolific, completing many landscapes, views of missions, and western people.
