    • Portrait of the Maharsha – Engraving from Chiddushei Halachot by the Maharsha, Vienna 1814
      Aug. 28, 2018

Portrait of the Maharsha – Engraving from Chiddushei Halachot by the Maharsha, Vienna 1814

      Est: -

Portrait of R. Shmuel Eidels, the Maharsha, engraving by Sebastian Langer (1772-1841), [from the book Chiddushei Halachot by the Maharsha, Vienna, 1814, printed by George Holzinger]. The engraving shows a Torah scholar poring over books with a quill in his hand. This portrait is attributed to the Maharsha. He is seen with long locks of hair [reputedly, he grew his hair to attach his locks to a nail in the ceiling so if his head nods in sleep while studying, the pulling of his hair will wake him]. Verses printed at the bottom of the engraving, one from Kohelet and two from the Book of Devarim. Signed in print: "Sebastian Langer Fecit" (in Hebrew). 22X32 cm. Good-fair condition. Restored tears around the engraving slightly damaging the top left corner. Large open tear, restored, to the bottom of the leaf (not affecting the engraving). Light worming, some restored.
