JEAN-BAPTISTE-GABRIEL LANGLACÉ,  FRENCH 1786-1864-  VIEW OF GRENOBLE;  OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND D

      Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Jean-Baptiste-Gabriel Langlacé,   French 1786-1864-  View of Grenoble;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Langlacé 1850' (lower right), bears indistinct inscription on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, bears old inscribed label on the lower horizontal stretcher bar, 26.2 x 38.6 cm.  Provenance:   Private Collection, UK.  Note:   The present work depicts the Quai de la Graille on the Isère River from the opposite side of the city centre, on the banks beneath Mont Rachais in the Chartreuse Mountains. On the left of the quay is the back of the Palais du Parlement du Dauphiné with its bluish-pointed rooftop. Towering from the houses’ rooftops are the spiky tower of the Collegiate Church of Saint-André and, to its right, the taller Saint-Louis Church. In the background are the Chaîne de Belledonne mountains with the snow not yet melted on their highest peaks. Langlacé was Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s first teacher before Achille Etna Michallon (1796-1822). His output is defined by his topographical paintings, often depicting expansive views of his native France. The present work hints towards the influence of the Classical landscape artist Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), particularly in the soft, atmospheric and golden light, which suggests the approaching dusk. Unlike Claude though, Langlacé's works reject allegorical or imaginary settings, and serve instead as carefully observed studies of specific locations in France. For a slightly smaller comparable view by the artist, see his canvas which sold at Artcurial, Paris, 23 March 2017, lot 162 (€5,850). Napoleon III (1st President of France) presented a painting by Langlancé entitled ‘Le coup de soleil’ to  Queen Victoria on her birthday, 24 May 1855. It is recorded as having been in the State Visitors' Dressing Room no.229 at Buckingham Palace in 1876 [see RCIN406552].
