      Jun. 07, 2022

WILLIAM M. LANNING (AMERICAN, B.C. 1837-1860) STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT AND SQUIRREL

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

William M. Lanning (American, B.C. 1837-1860) Still Life with Fruit and Squirrel Signed 'Lanning' bottom right; also signed, dated '1859' and located 'Philadelphia' (upside down) on upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 22 x 27 in. (55.9 x 68.6cm) Provenance Pook & Pook Inc., Downingtown, sale of January 13, 2012, lot 412. Acquired directly from the above sale. Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. The relined canvas in overall good condition, with a glossy finish and a thin layer of dust over the canvas, which might suggest a need for a light cleaning. With very thin craquelure throughout the composition, especially visible in the background in the upper tier of the canvas (one long crack stretching horizontally just above the still life, which the excess of varnish makes more prominent than the others, although it is stable). Examination under UV light reveals scattered varnish remaining (indicative of a selective cleaning), especially visible near the outer edges. With some inpainted craquelure at upper center near the top edge (woth associated inpainted old losses), and at bottom left corner on some of the peaches. Localized, careful inpainted on some of apples at upper center, left and right. Small repair at center on the basket below the apples, another one (smaller) at center left in between the grapes and the apples. Another one at center right, to the right of the squireel's tail (very small - the squirrel itself is intact). Small series of inpainted flakes at bottom right on the corner of the table cloth, and a minor repair at bottom right just underneath the signature. Heavy varnish across the bottom outer edge. Older restoration at upper right, in the dark background. Similar pattern at upper center left, and upper left quadrant. See specialist's pictures for more details. Frame: 30 1/4 x 35 1/4 x 1 3/4 in.
