FRANZ LASKOFF (FRANCOIS LASKOWSKI, 1869-1921). LA STRAGE DEGLI INNOCENTI. Circa 1900. 57x39 inches, 145x100 cm. Ricordi, Milan.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

FRANZ LASKOFF (FRANCOIS LASKOWSKI, 1869-1921) LA STRAGE DEGLI INNOCENTI. Circa 1900. 57x39 1/2 inches, 145x100 cm. Ricordi, Milan. Condition B+ / B: minor losses and discoloration along sharp vertical and horizontal folds. As a young man Laskoff studied in Strasbourg, Paris and London. It was there that he found the greatest influences on his style, as his work with flat colors was certainly inspired by Aubrey Beardsley and the Beggarstaff Brothers. When he arrived in Italy in 1900 he went straight to work for Ricordi, and began producing exceptional posters for the company's largest accounts. His style is dramatically different from his contemporary counterparts at Ricordi, Adolfo Hohenstein and Leopoldo Metlicovitz. Unlike the exuberant Liberty Style, Laskoff employs minimal outlining and minimal decorative effects, and uses flat colors to design strong images like this one, which is one of the rarest of his music posters. Ricordi 68, Wember 529.

  • Mele & Ci./Oggi Occasioni.
    May. 03, 2009

    Mele & Ci./Oggi Occasioni.

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Laskoff's 2-sheet advertisement for "Today's Bargains" at the Milanese department store is "distinguished by its use of flat shades of yellow and black, creating a unique positive/negative effect with obvious Eastern roots and a link to photographic work. The shapes recall old Eighteenth Century silhouettes; all charred detailing and proclaiming to a maximum degree the constructive figure, capable of determining rich dynamic spaces, evoking-in the absence of chiaroscuro and makeshift descriptives-volume and form. The fanciful silhouette of the abundant plumes in the ladies hats alone suggests the frivolous and elegant atmosphere of the era's aristocratic atmosphere. The poster's protagonists exist then beneath large superimposed lettering, characterized by a very polished design and in tune with the same rhythmic liberty, the same cosmetic sobriety, of the image" (Mele, p.205). • Smalti Colorificio Italiano.

    Smalti Colorificio Italiano.

    Est: $3,500 - $4,000

Smalti Colorificio Italiano. FRANZ LASKOFF (Francois Laskowski, 1869-1921) G. Ricordi, Milano Cond B/Slight tears and stains at folds. An effective use of the paper "reserve"-the white of the paper upon which this 2-sheet promotional image is printed-focuses our attention on the pristine workman and, not coincidentally, the Smalti paint he uses to produce superior results. Some versions of this poster appear with altered bottom text. A portrait painter and landscapist, Laskoff (born Franz Laskowski in Bromberg, Germany) traveled in France, England and elsewhere, but most of his work was done in the early-1900s in Italy, where he proved that he could match the best graphic artists of his day. He produced about twenty posters, all of them very distinguished, in a style that was uniquely his own. 1906 56 5/8 x 79 in./144 x 200.5 cm
