  • Josef Lauer (1818-1881), Still Life with Fruits, Bird's Nest and Lizard on Forest Floor
    Oct. 31, 2020

Josef Lauer (1818-1881), Still Life with Fruits, Bird's Nest and Lizard on Forest Floor

    Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Josef Lauer continued painting Biedermeier still life in Vienna into the second half of the 19th century. He is thus in the tradition of still life painting of the 17th and 18th centuries, so that 200 years of the development of still life painting are reflected in his works. He worked primarily as a flower and fruit painter, but in the painting presented he turned to a combination of forest floor, walls and still life with fruit and a bird's nest, that of Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606–1684) was invented in a picture painted in the 1660s. The painting is now in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie (inv. No. 1261) and has inspired numerous painters to create similar pictures. Lauer arranged a still life of grapes, peaches, melon, pumpkin, corn and a medlar branch (Mespilus germanica) on the ground, on which there is a bird's nest with eggs and a lizard is looking for food. The peaches form a light center in the composition around which the colors of the fruits unfold in richly differentiated tones of green, yellow and red. The blue lizard sets a color contrast against it.

Paintings similar in size are very rarely offered on the art market. Condition: The painting is well presented. It is signed and dated lower right ‘Josef Lauer’. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially along the edges. There are also very fine scattered scratches and tiny losses of paint. The gilded wooden frame shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 88 x 121 cm and the size of the stretcher is 63.5 x 97.5 cm. Josef Lauer (1818-1881) Josef Lauer attended the Academy of Arts in Vienna and was trained, amongst others, by the still life painter Sebastian Wegmayr (1776-1857), who influenced him significantly. From 1840, Lauer regularly presented his works at the Academy’s great exhibitions which was later followed by the exhibitions at the Viennese ‘Kunstverein’. In 1861, he was finally appointed member of the local ‘Künstlerhaus’. Josef Lauer is regarded as one of the last still life painters of the Viennese Biedermeier period. Still life paintings by Josef Lauer are characterized by the skillful presentation of flowers and fruits in a neutral or finely executed background. Lauer usually applied fresh colors and sometimes animated his compositions with colorful birds and butterflies. Josef Lauer followed the artistic approach of the Viennese painter Johann Baptist Drechsel (1756-1811) and finally developed his own unmistakable style. Paintings similar in size are very rarely offered on the art market. The painting is well presented. It is signed and dated lower right 'Josef Lauer'. From 1840, Lauer regularly presented his works at the Academy's great exhibitions which was later followed by the exhibitions at the Viennese 'Kunstverein'. In 1861, he was finally appointed member of the local 'Künstlerhaus'. Josef Lauer is regarded as one of the last still life painters of the Viennese Biedermeier period. His works can be found in the Belvedere and in many private collections. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Öl/Lwd.; R. u. sign.; 50 cm x 63 cm. Rahmen. Vgl. Fuchs, Bd. 3, S. K 14. Still life with roses and a great tit. Oil on canvas. Signed.
