Painter, Illustrator, b. 1865 - d. 1940

Sydney Laurence, born in New York in 1865, gained fame for his paintings of Alaska, his adoptive home in later years. In his youth, Laurence attended the Peekskill Military Academy, but showed a proclivity for painting. In 1887, the National Academy in New York began exhibiting art by Sydney Laurence. However, he left his home in 1889, traveling extensively for 15 years.

Sydney Laurence's art draws inspiration from French Impressionism and tonalism, an American art movement characterized by the use of a single, dominant color and glazed finishes. In 1903, Laurence moved to Alaska, working as a prospector and painter. Indeed, the subject of Sydney Laurence's paintings became almost exclusively Mount McKinley and the Alaskan frontier. Native Alaskans and tourists alike enthusiastically bought prints for sale by Sydney Laurence, who remains a popular and respected figure.     An early original oil painting by the late Alaska artist Sydney Mortimer Laurence (1865-1940), signed lower right as SM Laurence and dated c.1889, the same year he married Alexandrina Fredricka Dupre in New York City and relocated to the English artist's colony of St. Ives, Cornwall. It was several years later, in 1903, that he journeyed back across the Atlantic and made his way to Alaska in search of gold. This early maritime work features a series of docked sailboats, softly illuminated from the nearby buildings under a night sky. The unframed canvas measuring 17" x 21" is noted to have been relined with evidence of minor inpainting.

    Presented in this lot is a Sydney Laurence Northern Pacific Railway Travel Poster Lithograph of "The New Yakima Gateway to Rainier National Park, circa mid-century. Sydney Mortimer Laurence was an American Romantic landscape painter and Alaska's most prominent of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Laurence forged a uniquely personal style by applying the tonalist techniques he had learned in New York and Europe to the wilderness of the North. He, more than any other artist, defined for Alaskans and others the image of Alaska as "the last frontier." The Northern Pacific Railway was a transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern tier of the western United States, from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. It was approved by Congress in 1864 and given nearly 40 million acres of land grants, which it used to raise money in Europe for construction with the goals of connecting the Great Lakes with Puget Sound on the Pacific, opening vast new lands for farming, ranching, lumbering and mining, and linking Washington and Oregon to the rest of the country. This professionally mounted matted lithograph is in nice condition, slight creasing noted along vertical borders, rustic wood frame is in good condition. Visible art measures 28.5"W x 38.5"L, frame is 32.75"Wx 42.75"L x .5"D, weight 9lb, 8oz.

Somewhat illegible notes lower edge en verso reference "Hewitt's Photo" which likely is the Hewitt's Drug Store (Anchorage) which operated from 1948 to 1978 and specialized in the sale of posthumous postcards, photos, and reproduction paintings and prints of works by the artist. Housed within a thick batwing frame demonstrating cracking and slight water stains en verso, measures approximately 27" 3.5" x 40" overall.

    Sydney Laurence Oil Painting of Mt. McKinley c.1919

    An original oil on canvas c.1919 by the late great Alaskan artist Sydney Laurence (1865-1940), depicting the striking view of Mount Denali, or Mount McKinley as it was officially designed at the time. Painted from the headwaters of the Teklanika River on July 13th, 1919, the mountain summit is shrouded in mist while the valley is brightly lit from the sun, with a flock of birds flying over the field of purple lupine. Signed at lower left in the artist's hand (faded), and housed within a distressed reeded frame with artist notes en verso. The painting is untouched, recently found in a multi-generational estate. Measures 25" x 25" overall, image sight 20" x 15".
