Artist Thomas Lawrence, 18th century England's preeminent portrait artist, had humble beginnings as an innkeeper's son. Despite his lack of education, Lawrence was an art prodigy who ably sketched faithful portraits of the inn's guests. In 1787, his talent led him to London's Royal Academy where, at the age of 18, Lawrence began his formal training as a painter. Two short years later, Thomas Lawrence's paintings had garnered such a reputation that Queen Charlotte commissioned him to paint her portrait. 

Thomas Lawrence's portraits are characterized by their accomplished brushstrokes, colors, and textures, but it was Thomas Lawrence the artist, with his refined manner and flare for the dramatic, that secured his position as the preferred portrait artist of the aristocracy.               SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE AND STUDIO (BRISTOL 1769-1830 LONDON) SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE AND STUDIO (BRISTOL 1769-1830 LONDON) Portrait of Caroline Lady Suffield of Belton Hall in Grantham (died 1850), seated half-length, landscape beyond inscribed 'Portrait of Caroline Lady Suffield, by Sir Tho.s Lawrence' (verso), bears label inscribed 'Lady Suffield of Belton Hall, Sir Thomas Lawrence' (verso) oil on canvas 82 x 72 cm. (32 1/4 x 28 in.) This portrait of Lady Caroline Hobart (d. 1850) by Sir Thomas Lawrence has only recently come to light. The composition repeats a three-quarter-length version of the canvas that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1793 painted when Lawrence was just twenty-four years old. This canvas remains in the collection of her descendants.1 Lady Caroline was the second of the three daughters of John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire (1723–93) and his first wife, Mary Anne Drury. At the death of her father she inherited the Blickling Estate, now the property of the National Trust. The commission for both portraits must have been prompted by the sitter’s marriage to the Hon. William Assheton Harbord (1766–1821) on 4 June 1792 at St George’s, Hanover Square, London. He succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Suffield on 4 February 1810. The larger version was probably intended for the sitter’s father, and the other for her husband. Lawrence’s work was first shown at the Academy in 1790 and the bravura technique and the originality of his compositions were immediately admired and his portrait of Lady Caroline shows both these innovative characteristics. The unusual pose, the sitter’s head turned sharply to her right with her right elbow resting on a plinth and seated above a river landscape has Lawrence’s characteristic relaxed assurance while the handing of the head shows the painter’s distinctive energetic brushwork. Although commissioned in 1793, neither of the portraits of Lady Caroline were delivered until after Lawrence’s death. Lawrence’s disorganized studio and the gout that killed Lord Buckinghamshire in August 1793 may have contributed to the amnesia regarding the portraits and the two canvases were included in a list of the contents of the studio by Lawrence’s executor, Archibald Knightley. The list totalled 430 items that included nearly 150 portraits, some of which were left unfinished. A manuscript entitled ‘Claims’, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum,2 includes the two portraits as number 194 and the curious comment, ‘Orig[inal] & copy — both unfinished. about 1/2 ‘. The larger painting, which cost £52.10s, appears entirely autograph whereas the painting presently offered by Chiswick Auctions was left unfinished and completed by one of Lawrence’s assistants after his death. It was bought by the sitter for £26.5s. Both paintings were delivered to the sitter in November 1832. The ‘Claims’ document described both paintings as ‘unfinished’ and, while the larger canvas in a private collection seems complete, this is a correct description of the canvas presently offered. The costume below the neckline and the background landscape do not have the detailed brushstrokes that enliven the face, the hand and the decorative ruff and these areas of the canvas are just blocked in. There is every reason to believe that Lawrence put the canvas aside in 1793, and neither he, nor his studio, ever touched the canvas again. Similarly delicate drawings include Lawrence's portrait studies of William Sotheby and Anne Wellesley, both of which are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery [NPG 3955 and NPG 2665 respectively].  The present work reputedly depicts Elizabeth Hodgkin, née Rickman, who was married to the calligrapher and grammarian John Hodgkin (1766-1845), the first important member of the prominent Quaker family. Significant descendants of John and Elizabeth include the physician Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866), the physiologist Alan Hodgkin (1914-1998), and the artist Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017).

Recent research into the chalk inscription to the stretcher of the present lot, suggests that the picture was probably owned by the British diplomat Sir Michael Walker (1916 - 2001). One of Walker's ancestors, David Bevan (1774 - 1846) was one of the bankers who founded Barclay, Bevan and Co., which went on to become Barclays Bank. Bevan's wife, Favell Bourke Lee was painted by Lawrence (see, Bonhams, Old Master Pictures, 25 October 2017, lot 44), and it is therefore reasonable to suggest that her granddaughter Louisa Clara Bosanquet (B.1826), may also have been painted by the artist. The suggestion of Louisa as a candidate for the sitter in the present lot becomes even more compelling when we learn that, though her aunt Mrs. Thomas Mortimer, she had a link to a pet sheep which she is known to have helped to bathe in the sea. In addition to a sheep, Mortimer, who wrote some of the most educational children's books of the nineteenth century (such as The Peep of Day), had a menagerie of pets including a parrot which she took to bed, and a donkey. As Mortimer's favourite niece the pair went on to write two books together. The present lot is comparable to Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Lady Alexandrina Vane, No. 785, and George Vane-Tempest, No. 512 (Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence - A Complete Catalogue of the Oil Paintings).

The author offers us a portrait of great sobriety, dominated by a palette of cold tonalities, which are only qualified with the use of rounded forms that contribute delicacy to the piece as it is observed in the treatment of the handkerchief in the neck. Both the composition and the pictorial execution of this excellent portrait fit with the characteristics of the best English portrait painting of the first quarter of the 19th century, and especially with the work of Sir Thomas Lawrence and his closest circle. Sir Thomas Lawrence was, after the death of Joshua Reynolds in 1792, Britain's foremost portraitist. His early training took place in Bath, where he learned from William Hoare the technique of pastel, and from Thomas Barker the correct handling of oil paint. In 1787 he moved to London, where he exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy. He began to triumph thanks to his female portraits, such as the one of Elizabeth Farren, where we can already guess certain traits of sensitivity that he would develop in his more mature production. In 1791 he was admitted to the Royal Academy and the following year, after the death of Joshua Reynolds, he became the king's painter. In 1815 he was knighted and that same year the royal family commissioned a series of portraits for the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle. In 1820 he succeeded Benjamin West as president of the Royal Academy. Lawrence's portraits were based on the "great style" of Reynolds, but the Bristol painter opened the way to a new concept of portraiture with respect to the model, his personal demeanor and his emotional portrayal. He knew how to rescue a very personal vision of his clients, typical of the romantic portrait and of the Victorian era. His models are presented in relaxed and natural attitudes, the brushstroke is delicate, imperceptible in the faces and lighter and sketched in the clothes and the landscape, which almost always has an important role.

              Attributed to THOMAS LAWRENCE (Bristol, 1769 - London, 1830). Untitled. Oil on canvas. Measurements: 73,5 x 63 cm; 96 x 84 cm (frame). The author offers us a portrait of great sobriety, dominated by a palette of cold tonalities, which are only qualified with the use of rounded forms that contribute delicacy to the piece as it is observed in the treatment of the handkerchief in the neck. Both the composition and the pictorial execution of this excellent portrait fit with the characteristics of the best English portrait painting of the first quarter of the 19th century, and especially with the work of Sir Thomas Lawrence and his closest circle. Sir Thomas Lawrence was, after the death of Joshua Reynolds in 1792, Britain's foremost portraitist. His early training took place in Bath, where he learned from William Hoare the technique of pastel, and from Thomas Barker the correct handling of oil paint. In 1787 he moved to London, where he exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy. He began to triumph thanks to his female portraits, such as the one of Elizabeth Farren, where we can already guess certain traits of sensitivity that he would develop in his more mature production. In 1791 he was admitted to the Royal Academy and the following year, after the death of Joshua Reynolds, he became the king's painter. In 1815 he was knighted and that same year the royal family commissioned a series of portraits for the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle. In 1820 he succeeded Benjamin West as president of the Royal Academy. Lawrence's portraits were based on the "great style" of Reynolds, but the Bristol painter opened the way to a new concept of portraiture with respect to the model, his personal demeanor and his emotional portrayal. He knew how to rescue a very personal vision of his clients, typical of the romantic portrait and of the Victorian era. His models are presented in relaxed and natural attitudes, the brushstroke is delicate, imperceptible in the faces and lighter and sketched in the clothes and the landscape, which almost always has an important role.
