He became an artist at a very young age, attended the Art Students League in New York and had his first show at age 21 at Abercrombie & Fitch in New York City.Lawrence served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II as a Combat Artist and Chief Boatswain's Mate. He saw action in the battles for North Africa, Sicily, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. While with the U.S.S. Samuel chase he was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry and Intrepidity in Action. After the war Lawrence had a long and productive art career. Lawrence worked as an illustrator for leading magazines including Field and Stream and The Saturday Evening Post. The February 1942 cover of The Saturday Evening Post featured a painting by Lawrence of a marlin chasing a baitfish into the surf. Additionally, his works have been published in Van Campen Heilner's book Salt Water Fishing and Bob Dunn and Peter Goadby's book Saltwater Game Fishing of the World.Lawrence reached further prominence with his classically painted portraits of saltwater game-fish, salmon and wild trout leaping out of the water. The February 1942 cover of The Saturday Evening Post featured a painting by Lawrence of a marlin chasing a baitfish into the surf. Additionally, his works have been published in Van Campen Heilner's book Salt Water Fishing and Bob Dunn and Peter Goadby's book Saltwater Game Fishing of the World.Lawrence reached further prominence with his classically painted portraits of saltwater game-fish, salmon and wild trout leaping out of the water. He went on to have shows at the Crossroads of Sports, the Kennedy Gallery, the Sporting Gallery, the Harlow Gallery, Field and Stream, Seagram's Distillery and Life Magazine. William Goadby Lawrence was born in Rumson, New Jersey, in 1913. He attended the Art Students League in New York City and had his first show at the outfitters Abercrombie and Fitch. During World War II, he served as a Combat Artist and Chief Boatswain's Mate and experienced action in battles in North Africa and Japan. After the war, Lawrence continued his artistic pursuits. His illustrations appeared in various magazines, including "Field and Stream." On February 28, 1942, the cover of "The Post" featured a marlin painting by Lawrence. His work was also published in Van Campen Heilner's "Salt Water Fishing" and Bob Dunn and Peter Goadby's "Saltwater Game Fishing of the World." Lawrence's paintings have been exhibited in the Library of Congress, the Museum of Natural History, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Museum. Lawrence is widely recognized as one of the greatest fish painters of all time. According to the consignor, this painting was a part of the du Pont collection and was displayed at one of the family's Fishers Island homes.

Goadby Lawrence" on back In 1955, James O'Donnell won the International Light Tackle Sailfish tournament in West Palm Beach. He caught eight fighting sails during the three-day event and bested baseball and fishing legend Ted Williams as the winner of the tournament. Sports Illustrated noted, "Dethroned champion Ted Williams, Boston Red Sox slugger,finished far behind with two catches, told reporters he planned to fish this summer, would definitely retire from baseball." O'Donnell was presented with this painting as reward for winning the tournament by the artist William Goadby Lawrence.
