          Monumental Commemorative Bronze Plaque "William Phipps Blake, Geologist & William Phipps Blake II, MCMIX (1909), signed lower right, 30" x 34 1/2" x 3". Scuffs. William Phipps Blake (1826-1910), geologist, mining consultant, and educator, helped route the railroad from the Mississipi to the Pacific, was involved in places like Tombstone and Bisbee, Arizona, Eureka and Virginia City, Nevada and Leadville, Colorado. His work for the Government and scientific presses and teaching at University of California influenced generations of mining engineers. His grandson died at age 16 in 1919, New Rochelle, NY. Lawrie provided much of the scuptural decoration for Rockefeller Center, including the massive glass "Wisdom" in the entry hall.

          Lee Oscar Lawrie (1877 – 1963) was an architectural sculptor commissioned to create a figure to be installed atop the Nebraska State Capitol circa 1930. This tabletop model was cast in 1978 after the 19-foot bronze sculpture installed at the Nebraska State Capitol, the hooded male figure casting seeds from a pouch at his waist, dark verdigris patina, free-form circular base inscribed 'The Sower Lee Lawrie 1928 copy - Geo. Hoffmeister 1978 #7'. The Hensons moved from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City in 1959. Measures 11.5 x 5.25 x 5.25 inches.           Lee Lawrie (German/ American, 1877-1963) the four horsemen of the apocalypse Bronze, dark brown patina, modeled as four figures, representing Conquest, War, Famine and Death, inscribed 'LEE LAWRIE' and with foundry mark for the Roman Bronze Works, NY. Note:Commissioned by the motion picture director Rex Ingram for the premiere of his 1921 film 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse'. This critically acclaimed and ground-breaking film was the highest grossing film of the year and propelled its star Rudolph Valentino into national prominence. Lee Lawrie is widely known for his public works including the Atlas bronze in Rockefeller Center and generally did not accept private commissions. He believed art should be enjoyed by the masses and not the select few who could afford it. Ingram however was one of Lawries' favorite students from Yale, and it was the film's subject matter (the destructive and ruinous nature of war) that appealed to the sculptor's sensibilities and so this was one of the few private commissions he executed.
