Carey & I. Lea, 1824. 2 volumes. 8vo (217 x 132 mm). Half-titles. With folding map and 15 engraved plates, chiefly engraved by J. Hill after drawings by Samuel Seymour. Early 20th century half black morocco and green cloth, spines with 5 raised bands, edges gilt. Toning throughout, folding map with slight tears at folds. FIRST EDITION. THE PRIMARY SOURCE ON STEPHEN H. LONG'S IMPORTANT SECOND EXPEDITION to explore the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Keating, a professor of mining and chemistry, was appointed geologist and historiographer of the expedition. Field describes the work as 'almost a cyclopedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention of the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statements regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people.'
