Benjamin Williams Leader Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1831 - d. 1923

Artist Benjamin Williams Leader was a Victorian-era painter whose primary subject was English landscapes. His subjects ranged from riversides at dusk to country scenes of quaint homesteads or churches. He began his career working as an engineer, but after much persistence on his part, his father let him pursue his art. Benjamin Williams Leader's paintings show his attention to detail, love of bright colors, and clever techniques when capturing natural light.

In 1889, Benjamin Williams Leader's painting In the evening it shall be light won the gold medal in France at the Exposition Universalle. Occasionally, he would paint two versions of the same painting with tiny changes to the second piece, which is a point of interest to look for when viewing Benjamin Williams Leader's artwork for sale. As a child, Leader would accompany his father on artistic outings, sparking his creative interests. Leader attended the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he would exhibit his work every summer, even long after his departure. Much of Leader's work, like the current piece, was inspired by the bucolic landscapes of the Worcester countryside. While his earlier works lean more towards a Pre-Raphaelites and plein air style, later in life he shifted towards a looser, impressionist approach. • Benjamin Williams Leader, RA,  View of a river in a mountainous landscape, with figures resting on the shore
    Mar. 12, 2025

Benjamin Williams Leader, RA,  View of a river in a mountainous landscape, with figures resting on the shore

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Benjamin Williams Leader, RA,  British 1831-1923-  View of a river in a mountainous landscape, with figures resting on the shore;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'B.W.LEADER 1891' (lower left), 50.5 x 66.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present work is a charming example of Leader's romantic landscapes, which often depict the countryside of his native Worcestershire and the mountains and rivers of neighbouring Wales. Indeed, this landscape is strikingly similar to that illustrated in Leader's painting of 'The river Conwy at Betws y Coed', which sold at Bonhams, Knightsbridge, on13 November 2024 (lot 44) for £6,000. The warm light of the setting sun with which the artist has illuminated the landscape renders the present painting particularly atmospheric.

Benjamin Williams Leader (1831 - 1923) Oil on canvas, signed lower left, measures 20 x 24 inches and 25.5 x 34 inches. Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 - 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802-79) and Sarah Whiting (1801-88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker - their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of Friends.Leader's father was a keen amateur artist - a friend of John Constable - and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. His brother, also Edward Leader Williams, later became a notable civil engineer who was knighted for his work, and is now mainly remembered for designing Manchester Ship Canal - which was to become the theme of Leader's largest painting. The family eventually came to reside at "Diglis House" - now a hotel.

    Benjamin Williams Leader (1831 - 1923) United Kingdom/England

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Benjamin Williams Leader (1831 - 1923) Watercolor on paper, Signed Lower Right, Measures (19.5 x 14 inches) w/frame (25.5 x 20 inches) Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 - 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802-79) and Sarah Whiting (1801-88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker - their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of Friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist - a friend of John Constable - and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. His brother, also Edward Leader Williams, later became a notable civil engineer who was knighted for his work, and is now mainly remembered for designing Manchester Ship Canal - which was to become the theme of Leader's largest painting. The family eventually came to reside at "Diglis House" - now a hotel.

Benjamin Williams Leader British, (1831-1923) Hill, Vale, and Stream, 1900 oil on canvas Benjamin Williams Leader initially became interested in sketching en plein air alongside his engineer father in beautiful Worcester (Worcestershire County, England--home of the popular Lee & Perrins tangy vinegar-based condiment invented by chemists in 1837). Leader became his father's draughtsman while studying art and then found his calling in the creation of large landscape paintings--and this piece is one of those very large-scale and prime examples of his work. His inspiration was the picturesque rolling countryside around Worcester, a dreamy green landscape filled with cottages, farmhouses, farmers, working animals, the River Severn, lanes, forests, fields, and churches--not to mention the extremely famous Worcester Cathedral (completed 1084). In this summertime painting Leader focuses on a wide running stream set among hills and vales on one side and an inviting beach lined with willows on the other. Upon closer inspection we find many fascinating and poetic details of Worcester from the year of this work (1900): a large farmhouse and barn, a few black and white horses pulling a huge wooden wagon stacked tall with hay, several country workers leading their way, and a couple of country gentlefolk in hats sitting down to enjoy the stream next to their resting dog. Leader's realistic landscapes with these such poetic details were highly sought after in and around Worcester and across England; and he gained great commercial success during his lifetime with them. Today paintings like this one are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery in London (among many other prestigious institutions and private collections). Signed and dated lower left, gilt-framed.
