David Messum produced a note at the time of sale as follows; "Leakey was once described by Sir Thomas Lawrence as the "The English Wouvermans".it is surprising that so little is known of the private life of this talented man. He was born in Exeter and won for himself an enviable reputation as a portrait and miniature painter. In 1821 he came to London and exhibited at the RA. It was understood that Leakey only practised landscape painting during his travels from one miniature and portrait commission to the other."
