Chris Lebeau (1878-1945), Two stained glass windows, 1926, Atelier Liefkes, The Hague, Each depicting two women wearing a contemporary purple dress and red earrings, and holding an attribute: a green grinning mask and an owl in the left window, and two plants or crops in the right window. Made in 1926 for the residence of Mrs. C.G. Verburgt-Kramers, Schiefbaanstraat 29 in The Hague. Three other stained glass windows Lebeau executed for the stairwell of this house were donated by her heirs to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 1970. Moreover, the compositions are similar to the windows Lebeau executed for the marriage office of the former Amsterdam City Hall in the Prinsenhof in 1926, many of which also feature pairs of fashionably dressed female figures holding symbolic attributes. For this latter composition, Lebeau was inspired by the ceremony of royal marriages in the kraton of Yogyakarta. This source of inspiration may also have influenced the design of the windows that are on offer here. Each window: 132 x 27 cm, Provenance: -Mrs C.G. Verburgt-Kramers, until 1968 -Private collection, Two stained glass windows, 1926, Atelier Liefkes, The Hague,
