JEAN-BAPTISTE LECOEUR (France, 1795-1838). "Young man by the water", 1831. Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the left margin. Measurements: 34 x 27 cm; 46 x 39 cm (frame). The one we present here is a bucolic scene that shows a young woman sitting peacefully by a river, resting her arms on one of the branches that protrude from the magnificent trunk. The voluptuous tunic that covers her plump flesh gives a classical character to the composition, as well as her serene and restrained gesture. On a formal level, the scene reveals a great technical skill in the conception of the vegetation, especially in the play of light and shadow through the trees, and the reflections that are generated in the river. Jean-Baptiste Lecoeur was a pupil of the famous neoclassical artist Jean-Baptiste Regnault and exhibited regularly between 1822-1837 at the Paris Salon. Works by this artist can be seen in museums in Paris, Angers, Dijon, LeMans, Nancy, Avignon, Nantes, Tours.
