Sergei Evgrafovich Lednev-Schukin (1875–1961) was a Russian landscape and impressionist painter

Sergei was born 14 (26) August 1875 in Zaozerie, Yaroslavl Governorate, Russian Empire. He lived and worked most of his life in Moscow.

He graduated from the Central Stroganov School of Technical Drawing in Moscow. He was a member of the Association World of Art (Mir Iskusstva), Group of artists Nezavisimye 1907–1912, Saint Petersburg Society of Artists, Member of Moscow Association Sreda. After the Russian revolution he participated in the 2nd National Exhibition of paintings in Moscow (1918–1919), he also participated in the exhibition of Combined Arts in 1925, in exhibitions of Artists Society Assembly 1924–1929 and Iskysstvo Trudyaschimsya 1925-1928.[1][2][circular reference][3][4] His paintings were exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery (1989), Khimki Art Gallery (1990), Primoe Picture Gallery Vladivostok, Novokuznetsk Art Museum, Kherson Museum of Art in Ukraine and several other Russian museums and overseas collections including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.[5][6]

He died on 7 April 1961 in Moscow, USSR.

Lednev-Shukin' On the backing board with old handwritten label, inscribed with the artist's name and titled 'No. 3 Solnce sadaetsja' (The sun is setting) Dimensions: 34 x 48.2 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Berlin; according to the previous owner the painting has been owned by the family for circa 100 years, the grandparents/ancestors of the family were employed at the Tsar's court in the early 20th century and came to Germany in 1917/18 A romantic winter landscape in delicate colors - a typical example from the artist's oeuvre; the counterpart to this work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (accession no. 1975.280.12) The present work by Sergei Lednev-Shukin is a distinctive snow landscape from the Russian painter's oeuvre. It depicts a sleigh traveling through the snowy countryside on a path lined with a few bare birch trees. On the left there is a farmstead with the towers of a church in the background. The thick blanket of snow shimmers in the rays of the setting sun, which lets the trees cast long shadows. The delicate, nuanced color scheme and the virtuous play of light, which underlines the paintings scenic atmosphere, is characteristic of Lednev-Shukin's work. The counterpart to our work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (accession no. 1975.280.12). In this painting, however, the carriage moves toward the viewer, whereas the scenic backdrop is rendered almost identically. The work is signed in Cyrillic 'S. Lednev-Shukin' lower left. The backing board bears an old handwritten label, inscribed with the artist's name and titled 'No. 3 Solnce sadaetsja' (The sun is setting). The painting is in very good condition. The frame is a little chipped. The framed work measures 44 x 57.5 cm, the cardboard measures 34 x 48.2 cm. Sergei Evgrafovich Lednev-Shukin (1875-1961) Sergei Lednev-Shukin attended the Central Stroganov School in Moscow. He was a member of the group 'Mir Iskusstva' and the Moscow association 'Sreda' (Среда). He regularly participated in group exhibitions, for instance at the St. Petersburg Society of Artists. Lednev-Shchukin created primarily landscapes in which he captured the rural surroundings of his homeland. His preferred themes were winter landscapes with sleighs and birch trees.
