FERNAND LEDUCFRAGMENT VERT, 1968oil on canvassigned with initials, titled and dated ‘68 on the reverse 25 ins x 29 ins; 63.5 cms x 73.7 cms Provenance:Yves Laroche Galerie d’Art, MontrealFernand Leduc (1916-2014), referred to as “the prince of light,” is considered to be one of the most important Québécois painters of his time in Quebec, although he lived a good part of his life in France. During his career, Leduc worked through many forms of abstract painting, beginning with automatism (he signed Borduas’ Refus Global in 1948), then moving to hard-edge abstraction with the Plasticiens in 1955. This shift occurred out of Leduc’s desire to bring more order to his work. The Plasticiens practiced geometric abstraction and rejected the concept of illusionistic space, preferring a flat, two-dimensional space.Leduc’s early works in this style were populated with angular shapes formed by razor-sharp lines (“razor-edged,” to use Molinari’s term). The shapes begin to soften in the early 1960s, as Leduc introduced less rigid forms, gently curving lines and biomorphic shapes with no right angles. During the 1960s, he experimented with colour and form in compositions using two or three colours that reacted with each other, creating strong positive-negative effects. The biomorphic shapes are interlocked, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which results in a more vibrant, dynamic composition as colours and shapes interact across the surface of the canvas, appearing to advance and recede in turn.Fragment Vert is a fine example of the work he produced in the 1960s, before delving more deeply into colour theory with his microchromies in the following decade. The juxtaposition of the complementary colours, blue and orange, sets up a strong positive-negative relationship, and their intensity is heightened by the effect that each colour has on the other. A similar, though less intense, positive-negative dynamic occurs in the upper left corner of the canvas between the “green fragment” and the blue shape which abuts it. By adding another hue into the mix, albeit relatively small in area, Leduc altered the overall effect of the work. The key role of the green fragment is reflected in the title.Leduc saw himself as a painter of light, in the line of the French Impressionists and Neo-impressionists of the nineteenth century, creating light through colour.Estimate: $15,000–20,000

Leduc"" on a label Literature:Jean-Pierre Duquette, Fernand Leduc, 1980, page 16 Provenance:Galerie R. Creuze, Paris Private Collection, Montreal Exhibited:Galerie R. Creuze, Paris, Riopelle - Leduc, May 26 - June 10, 1950 In the 1940s, Fernand Leduc played a crucial role in the emergence and awakening of an artistic avant-garde in Quebec. Jean-Pierre Duquette writes, "Leduc was the first to speak of the necessity of forming a group and the first to propose a collective manifesto. He played a principal role in the development of the ideas of the Automatistes between 1943 and 1947." With the formation of this group, the power of evolution had been seized by Quebec painters. Following the second Automatist exhibition in Montreal, Leduc left for France in 1947, returning only periodically to Montreal. That same year, Leduc took part in the show Automatisme at the Galerie du Luxembourg in Paris, which showed works by six of the group's artists. This superb and rare oil dated 1949 was part of the exhibition titled Riopelle - Leduc at Galerie R. Creuze in Paris in 1950. Rooted in Automatism, the work presents vertical objects detaching themselves from the background - a formula found in the work of Paul-Émile Borduas - but by using the palette knife both in the background and in the objects Leduc gave an immediacy to the whole surface of the painting. He achieves a complex interrelation of space, depth and gesture through his expressive and lyrical use of brush and palette knife.

Fernand Leduc 1916 - Canadian oil on canvas Rouge mitoyen 39 1/4 x 32 inches 99.7 x 81.3 centimeters signed and dated 1967 and on verso titled and dated on the stretcher Literature:Line Ouellet, Fernand Leduc - Essay, 2007, http://www.canadacouncil.ca/prizes/ggavma/2007/ gd128182784313408336.htm (accessed April 13, 2009) Provenance:Private Collection, Montreal As the eldest member of Paul-Émile Borduas's circle, and the theoretician among the signatories of the Refus Global, Fernand Leduc knew he would have to find his own course in order to reconcile the energy found in the unconscious with his deep-seated predilection for order. His work at that point became more concerned with the concept of a constructed order and the role of geometry in painting. But as the 1960s progressed, Leduc's work became less preoccupied with the geometric and hard-edged properties of form and more involved with the interaction and contrast of colours. Shapes became somewhat softer and curvilinear, and the forms present in the work seemed to exist mainly to heighten varying depths of colour. Line Ouellet observes, "Like the Impressionists, Leduc is a true master of colour, whose hues and values he has tirelessly tested. These works require great clarity of vision on the part of the artist, and total immersion in the expanse of colour on the part of the viewer, the better to appreciate their many nuances. In such paintings, time and light meet and are held captive, to our very great delight."

Fernand Leduc 1916 - Canadian oil on canvas Chromatisme binaire: violet cobalt 19 3/4 x 24 inches 50,2 x 61 centimeters signed and dated 1964 and on verso signed, titled and dated Literature:Denise LeClerc, The Crisis of Abstraction in Canada: The 1950s, 1992, page 48 Provenance:Private Collection, Montreal Fernand Leduc was one of the linking members that facilitated a transition between the Automatist and Plasticien movements in Quebec. An important artist for numerous reasons, Leduc was able to approach and unify critical themes in art abstraction that had yet to be tackled by the Automatists. The geometric style of Leduc's painting was a break from the automatic painting style that his contemporaries such as Paul-Émile Borduas were fashioning. Chromatisme binaire: violet cobalt is a product of Leduc's second period in Paris, where the influence of painter Jean Bazaine, for whom Automatist painting techniques developed from automatic writing had reached an impasse, can be seen. A key approach Bazaine espoused was the reconciliation of the experiments of modern art and Cubism with Thomist philosophy based on the teachings of Thomas Aquinas. As Denise LeClerc writes, "Leduc, a former seminarian with a philosophical bent, found himself on familiar ground here." In this richly hued painting, Leduc has progressed to a more hard-edge style of abstraction, as seen in the linear shape of the light purple crescent contrasted against the dark, expansive background.

Fernand Leduc 1916 - Canadian oil on canvas Chromatisme binaire: noir-rouge 13 x 18 inches 33 x 45.7 centimeters signed and dated 1964 and on verso signed, titled, dated on the stretcher and inscribed ""Attestation d'authencité, F Leduc, 15/02/89"" and ""Collection appartenant à Claire Leduc, 15/02/89"" Provenance:Claire Leduc, Montreal Private Collection, Toronto Fernand Leduc is an important contributor to Quebec and Canadian abstract painting with connections to both the Automatist and Plasticien movements. Leduc's devotion to abstraction had its origins in 1948 when he was a signatory of the Automatists' Refus Global manifesto. Shortly thereafter, Leduc found himself and his work moving away from the spontaneous compositions of the Automatists towards a more controlled methodology of painting, and he became a member of the Plasticiens. It was with this new focus on the elements of colour, line and contrast that this piece, Chromatisme binaire: noire-rouge, was created. The binary colour palette and crisp hard edges create an uncertainty between foreground and background, leaving the viewer to appreciate the formal aspects of this painting's abstract beauty.
