        Frederick Richard Lee RA (1798-1879)

        Est: £20,000 - £30,000

Frederick Richard Lee RA (1798-1879) 'Gibraltar from the Sandbanks on the Western Shore of the Bay, Apes Hill and the African Coast in the distance' signed and dated lower right ‘F. R. Lee RA 1860’ inscribed with title and signed on the artist's label to the reverse oil on canvas 69.5 x 124.5cm Provenance: Christie’s, London, 25 April 1975, lot 106, for 2400 guineas (£2520) Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1861, no. 122 Born near the Devon coast, Frederick Richard Lee maintained a love of the sea and sailing throughout his life and is known to have travelled extensively on board his yacht to the coasts of France, Spain and Italy. He also spent time in South Africa, where he owned several farms and died in 1879. However, it appears that he painted relatively infrequently on his travels and today is best known for his prolific output of idyllic landscapes around Britain and his collaborations with animal and figurative artists such as Sir Edwin Landseer and William Powell Frith. The present painting is therefore a rare and exceptional example of Lee’s work abroad, one of a small series of oils of Gibraltar that the artist executed in the early 1860s. By this time, the imposing and commanding Rock had been within British territory for around 150 years and become a crucial base for the Royal Navy, having been fortified to withstand numerous Spanish attempts of recapture. Indeed, the big three-decker depicted by Lee to the right of this composition almost certainly belongs to the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean fleet. Lee exhibited this picture at the Royal Academy in 1861 (No. 122), with the present title, alongside another view, ‘The Signal Station, Gibraltar, from the Rocks at Breakneck Stairs’ (No. 16).

Frederick Richard Lee, RA, British 1798-1879 Burnham Beeches; watercolour and bodycolour on paper, signed, titled, and dated 'Burnham Beeches / F. R. Lee. RA. 1857' on the reverse of the sheet, 30.5 x 48 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lee was celebrated for his landscape paintings. Indeed, he likely painted the settings for his collaborations with prominent contemporaries such as Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902). The British landscape and its variety was clearly a constant source of inspiration to the artist, with his works depicting expansive vistas, riverside scenes, and canopied woodland (as in the present work) alike.
