Graduating with a Master of Fine Art from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing in 2008 and a Diploma in Illustration from the One Academy of Communication Design in 1998, Gan Chin Lee is a figurative artist who is known to have excellent craftsmanship and follows a time consuming process of creating images by first hand sketching in his studio. Experimentation with perspective and composition are a few of Chin Lee's tools for creating thought provoking works which are remarkable for their depth and relevance, reflecting contemporary Malaysian society today. It has been written that "his highly skilled painterly style of de-saturated colours and disciplined technique capture ethos and pathos.

          A sense of intimacy is captured through careful modelling of the subject in natural flesh tones. Composed from life, the seated lady is a refined study of the female form in a painterly style. Gan Chin Lee is part of the F Klub, a collective of visual artists linked by a mutual interest in celebrating the human figure in art. A finalist in the Saksi Competition in 2003, he got into the winning circle big-time when he was one of the five who won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA) in 2009, the others being Mohd Al-Khuzairie Ali, Poodien, Samsudin Wahab and Bakir Baharom. After his Diploma in Illustration at the One Academy of Communication Design, he went to China for his Advanced Studies in Mural Painting (2005) and Masters in Fine Art (2008, where he also won the Graduate Creation bronze prize) at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 2010, he won the Platinum Awards by the One Academy, where he lectures now.

A finalist in the Saksi Competition in 2003, Gan got into the winning circle big-time when he was one of the five who won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA) in 2009, the others being Mohd Al-Khuzairie Ali, Poodien, Samsudin Wahab and Bakir Baharom.After his Diploma in Illustration at the One Academy of Communication Design, he went to China for his Advanced Studies in Mural Painting (2005) and Masters in Fine Art (2008, where he also won the Graduate Creation bronze prize) at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts.           Inspired by the Tourism Malaysia’s slogan, ‘Cuti-Cuti Malaysia’, and ‘Malaysia Truly Asia’, this is part of his Makan 1Malaysia series. So, you get the self-explanatory Vietnam Ipoh Hor Fun, the Sri Lanka Penang Prawn Mee, the Myanmar Klang Bak Kut Teh, the Indonesian Hong Kong Won Ton Mee, and the Thai Kampung Fried Rice. We also borrowed from others like the tom yam, the Pattaya Fried Rice, Soto Bok. It has been estimated that in the Jalan Alor (Kuala Lumpur) Asian food heaven, 70% of the chefs and workers are immigrants, thus it is inevitable that foreign recipes sometimes get into the local menu. Food culture is a living and evolving thing. Gan Chin Lee received his MFA at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, China, in 2008, where he won the Bronze Award, after his Advanced Studies in Mural Painting at the same academy in 2005. He first graduated with a Diploma in Illustration at The One Academy in 1998. He had a joint exhibition with Samsudin Wahab at Galeri Chandan, Kuala Lumpur in 2010, before staging his first solo, Soliloquy at the Valentine Willie Fine Art, KL, in 2011. Another solo, In-Between, was at Richard Koh Fine Art in 2015.           Gan Chin Lee, a member of the ‘f Klub,’ has emerged in recent years as a major figurative artist focusing on anxieties of urban living, the quiet women, common people in food outlets outside and the migrant community. This 2010 work of a woman seated on a stool looking a mite anxious was in his first solo, Soliloquy, at the now defunct Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, in 2011. In November-December 2015, he had a solo at the Richard Koh Fine Arts titled in-between, on the lives of migrant workers on the fringes like in the Selayang wholesale market. A finalist in the Saksi competition in 2003, he got into the winning circle big-time when he was one of the five who won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA) in 2009, the others being Mohd Al-Khuzairie Ali, Shaifuddin Mamat a.k.a. Poodien, Samsudin Wahab and Bakir Baharom. After his Diploma in Illustration at the One Academy of Communication Design, he went to China for his Advanced Studies in Mural Painting (2005) and Masters in Fine Art (2008, where he also won the Graduate Creation bronze prize) at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 2010, he won the Platinum Award by the One Academy, where he lectures now. In the Henry Butcher (Young Contempo) auction, Chin Lee’s work, Status Anxiety VI (2010), from the Soliloquy exhibition, sold for a premium of RM7,150 and in the March 2015 auction, Standing Lady With Flower, RM2,688.

          Gan Chin Lee – one of the five young Gans in Malaysian art and mostly doing figuratives – has greatly improved his skills, style and concept since doing his Masters at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (2008), where he got the Bronze Graduate Creation Award. In 2005, he did his advanced studies in mural painting there. On his return, he was adjudged one of the winners of the Malaysia Emerging Artists Award. He first graduated with a diploma in Illustration from the One Academy of Communication Design, Kuala Lumpur, in 1998, when he got a Platinum Award.The woman in the work is probably a student from his art school who had graduated, and thus the congratulatory flowers. She is rather tall but has simple taste, as can be gleaned from her hairband and sandals. Gan held his Soliloquy solo exhibition at Valentine Will Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur in 2013.

His personal take and observations within local settings are sublimations, "at best I feel that they carry in them a kind of beauty of the melancholic." Gan Chin Lee's solo exhibitions include Fragment Defragmentation at Galeri Chandan, Kuala Lumpur (2010) and Soliloquy at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur (2011). He has also exhibited widely in Malaysia, China and Taiwan with group exhibitions in 2010 such as Tempo at Starhill Gallery, Art Triangle: The Gray Zone Project at National Art Gallery Malaysia and The Energy Trap at Valentine Willie Fine Art. In 2009, Chin Lee exhibited at the 14th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition in Tai Chung City, Taiwan and gained an Honourable Mention Award for his work in this show. While at the One Academy of Communication Design, Chin Lee won the Top Ten Award in 1998 and later in his career he was winner of the 2009 Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA) and a finalist in the 2010 Starhill Gallery Visual Artist Award. His works can be seen in publications such as Gold Mountain Blues published by Zhang Ling and Oil Painting Course: The First Studio published by Yue Wen Yi in Beijing.
