          • Group of Three Items Signed by Fitzhugh Lee, Lunsford L. Lomax, and William E. J
            Nov. 10, 2022

Group of Three Items Signed by Fitzhugh Lee, Lunsford L. Lomax, and William E. J

            Est: $640 - $960

Group of Three Items Signed by Fitzhugh Lee, Lunsford L. Lomax, and William E. Jones.  Including a typed letter signed by Lee as Governor of Virginia, a brief note from Lomax detailing his service history, and a supply document from Jones, predating the Civil War. Fitzhugh Lee Typed Letter Signed ("Fitzhugh Lee") as Governor of Virginia. One page, 10.25" x 7.5", Richmond, Virginia; March 13, 1888. Fitzhugh writes to former Union General Horatio C. King on Governor's Office letterhead, regarding the purchase of a sword presented to "Capt: Morgan", possibly the American Revolutionary war hero, Daniel Morgan, whose estate was located in Virginia where he was highly revered. With accompanying images of Lee: one engraved portrait and one photographic print heightened in gilt. Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905), nephew of Robert E. Lee and relative to a number of other noted Lees, undoubtedly contributed to his family's legacy. Starting with highly-acclaimed service in the cavalry in Texas, he joined the Confederate States Army at the outbreak of the Civil War, where he rose quickly through the ranks and served in a number of significant engagements, including the First Battle of Bull Run and the battles of the Maryland and Gettysburg, and the Overland campaigns, among others. Lee himself led the last Confederate charge at Farmville, Virginia in April 1865. He later served as governor of Virginia, consul-general at Havana, and returned to the military for the Spanish-American War. Interestingly, he and the writer of the following note, Lunsford L. Lomax, were roommates at West Point and maintained a close friendship all their lives. Lunsford L. Lomax Autographed Note Signed ("L. L. Lomax"). One page, 2.5" x 5.25", no place; no date. A note comprising a brief list of Confederate General Lomax's own military appointments, 1863-1864, with the date appointed. During the Civil War, Lunsford L. Lomax (1835-1913) rose through the ranks, ultimately appointed to major general, after which he saw action in the Shenandoah Valley, escaped capture at the Battle of Woodstock, and assumed command of the Valley District. Lomax played an essential role in overseeing various partisan units operating unofficially in Northern Virginia late in the war to provide key intelligence and scout reports, including "Mosby's Rangers [or Raiders]," commanded by the "Gray Ghost" John Mosby. William E. Jones Document Signed ("W.S. Jones"). One page, 9.75" x 7.75", Fort Merrill, Texas; November 29, 1852. Comprising a statement of provision returns, including pork, bread, beans, coffee, sugar, soap, etc. William "Grumble" E. Jones (1824-1864), a cavalry general, served in a number of significant engagements, including the First and Second Battles of Bull Run, the Orange Court House, and the Battle of Brandy Station preceding the Gettysburg Campaign. Jones was killed in action shortly after assuming command of Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley during the Valley Campaigns of 1864. Condition: Uneven edges with minor chipping. Light scattered foxing and soiling. Creased along old folds. Lomax document with remnants of prior mounting to the verso. HID01801242017
