Jake Lee began painting at an early age, depicting views of the Chinese communities in California and fishing docks near his home in Monterey. He studied art at San Jose State College and after taking a job as a commercial artist for a San Francisco newspaper, became friends with artist Dong Kingman. They spent a great deal of time painting on location in the city, and Lee credits Kingman as being an influential instructor and artistic inspiration to him. He worked as a commercial illustrator producing magazine covers, product advertisements, posters and childrens' book illustrations. Most of these were done with watercolors or gouache on illustration board. Est: $150 - $300

Entirely handmade "farewell"storyboard book given to Judy Heaslip on May 10, 1953 by a group of friends. Judy Heaslip Biggs was the daughter of famous aviation illustrator William John Heaslip (who worked as an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post and Colliers). Judy worked as a Registered Nurse at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and she was an accomplished artist and sculptor. She would have been 26 years old when she received this book from her friends, who must have thought she was a bit naive based on all the warnings against the social ills and pitfalls cautioned against in the text. Cover credits the lyrics to Jake Lee (1915-1991), an Asian artist from California who specialized in watercolors and worked as a commercial illustrator producing magazine covers, product advertisements, posters, and children's book illustrations. He may have represented himself on the right side of the cover illustration. Most of the illustrations in the book are watercolors or gouache on illustration board that were cut out and mounted on the pages. The text was written in verse, prepared on a typewriter, the cut out and glued onto the pages beneath the illustrations. The cover also credits Jesse Marsh for the lantern slides that must have accompanied the presentation to Miss Heaslip. Jesse Marsh (1906-1966) was a comic artist and illustrator for the original Tarzan comic books, and an animator for Walt Disney. This book was assembled with two thick cardboard covers and held together with two metal brads. Some of the pages have come loose from the binding, but the whole thing is in otherwise beautiful condition. Date: 1953 Country (if not USA): State: Nevada City: Las Vegas Provenance:
