Joseph Lee,  British 1780-1859-  Portrait of the artist's cousin, half-len

      Est: £600 - £800

Joseph Lee,  British 1780-1859-  Portrait of the artist's cousin, half-length, wearing a black overcoat and waistcoat, seated before before a dark red curtain;  enamel, extensively inscribed '[......] Yorkshire. / Painted immediately from Life, / as a Tribute to Friendship / by his Cousin Joseph Lee - / Enamel Painter to His R.H. / the Duke of Sussex.' verso, 13.1 x 10.6 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Joseph Lee taught himself enamel painting later in life, and went on to have a successful career as an enamellist, exhibiting at the RA and the Society of British Artists between 1809 and 1853. He was styled as ‘enamel painter’ to Princess Charlotte of Wales, and went on to be ‘enamel painter to Augustus, Duke of Sussex'. Queen Victoria also employed Lee’s services, and he produced numerous enamel copies of master paintings for her between 1844 and 1850.  This present work is an intimate example of Lee's work, showing the artist's cousin in distinguished formal attire, but with a soft and gentle expression.

Joseph Lee (1780-1859) "The Tanjore Venus"; a nude, wearing pearl bracelet, stretched out on a red

      Est: $1,561 - $2,341

velvet covered day bed, a column, lucious garden and volcano behind her enamel, signed on the counter-enamel From the celebrated Picture of/ Titian/ called the Tanjore Venus/ Painted by Joseph Lee/ 1810 with a further deleted inscription, gilt-metal mount stamped ENAMEL.J.LEE rectangular, 142mm. (5 5/8in.) high The present lot would appear to be based on a variant of Titian's "Venus of Urbino", painted in 1538 and now in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. However it has not been possible to find an exact prototype with the same setting. Lee's title "The Tanjore Venus" may be a reference to the western enamelling technique being similar to the Southern Indian technique of Tanjore painting. The latter involved adornment with semi-precious stones, pearls, glass pieces and gold. The main characteristics (as with enamelling) being rich vibrant colours and fine artistic work.
