(88.9 x 66cm) Provenance Freeman's Auctions, Sale of June 24, 2005, Lot 74. Property from the Estate of Mark Smith, Lynchburg, Virginia. In overall fair condition. Softening at the extreme edges. Craquelure present throughout the work but in stable condition. Faint stretcher creases can be seen around the edges of the work, most prominently in the upper left hand corner. Soil drips visible at the upper right corner. Under UV light a heavy green varnish present at lower left corner. Work could benefit from a light cleaning. Please see specialist photos for details. Frame: 37 1/4 x 28 1/2 x 1 1/2 in.

Signed lower right "M.de V. Lee" Manning De Villeneuve Lee (1894 - 1980) History: Manning de Villeneuve Lee was born in Summerville, South Carolina, on March 15, 1894, to Joseph and Gertrude Marie (Sweeny) Lee. He grew up along the South Carolina coast and attended both public and military schools. Lee attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1914-1915, but was called away for military service in Mexico and Europe between 1916 and 1919. He returned for three more years of study at the Pennsylvania Academy and traveled through Europe studying art on an academy scholarship in 1921. He married Eunice Celeste Sandoval, who would write children's books under the name Tina Lee, in 1922. Lee took an interest in illustration while at art school and began his career drawing for periodicals. He later illustrated over 200 children's books on adventurous and historical themes. Lee died at his home in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, on March 31, 1980. Condition: No notable flaws. - Meta: Illustration, picture, art

The scene shows a well dressed young man and woman seated on shoreline rocks with lighthouse and connected building beyond. Several seagulls are seen over crashing waves, all under a blue sky with white clouds. Signed lower right. Housed in a modern gilt frame. NOTE: Accompanying the lot is a copy of the book with the illustrated dust cover. SIZE: 36" x 32". CONDITION: Small scuff to bottom right, otherwise very good. 9-20667
