            Aug. 07, 2024

R.E. Lee Surrenders Confederate Funds at Appomattox & Fallen Richmond Flag Fragment. Museum Type Relics from the Fall of Confederacy and End of Civil War!

            Est: $1,200 - $1,400

Civil War Appomattox Court House, Virginia, ca. 1865 R.E. Lee Surrenders Confederate Funds at Appomattox & Fallen Richmond Flag Fragment. Museum Type Relics from the Fall of Confederacy and End of Civil War! Currency Captured Confederate States of America five dollar banknote, which was surrendered by General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox to end the Civil War. The bill, no. 52028, was issued in Richmond, VA and dated February 17th, 1864. The banknote is inscribed in the hand of Colonel A.B. Laurence "Appomattox" and initialed "ABL" to authenticate. Some expected wear and foxing. The bank note measures 7.125" x 3.25." Captured Richmond Flag Fragment from the Last Confederate Flag to fly over Richmond, the Confederate Capital. The captured flag was removed and cut up under the orders of General M.R. Patrick in early April of 1865 as the Civil War came to a close. The flag fragment measures 2.125" x 1." Both the flag fragment and currency were obtained by Lieutenant Colonel A.B. Laurence, Quartermaster of the US Army 24th Corps. Laurence authenticated these items in a letter written on "Office Chief, Quarter-Master, 24th Army Corps" letterhead from Richmond, VA, where he detailed their acquisition. A copy of which will be included in this lot. In part: "This is to certify - That the piece of bunting hereto attached is a piece of the Confederate Flag that floated over the Rebel Capitol in this city, cut in pieces for distribution as a significant memento. That the Confederate notes are a part of the Funds of the Army surrendered by Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Va and were receipted for by me as such an account of the Quartermaster's Commissary and Medical Departments of that Army, reported to the U.S. Commission and declared valueless." Abram Burtt Lawrence, born in 1834 in Warsaw, New York, joined the Union Army in 1862 during the Civil War as Quartermaster of the 130th New York Volunteers, which later became the First New York Dragoons. He advanced through various positions, ultimately serving as Chief Quartermaster of the 24th Army Corps. In this role, he was responsible for distributing Confederate Army supplies following General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, showcasing his significant contributions to the Union's logistical operations. These relics rarely surface, although Fleischers Auction sold an example of just a surrendered note for $4,000 earlier this year. A remarkable assemblage of surviving Confederate artifacts authenticated by a Union officer who was present when the Confederate capitol fell. Truly a museum quality lot! This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
