Signed and dated lower right: Van Leen. f. 1794 In his magnificent still lifes, Willem van Leen combines the tradition of Dutch flower painting with the decorative art of 18th century France. While depictions of putti in other paintings by the artist are often found on terracotta vases, the large relief with a billy goat and numerous putti on a broad plinth is a special feature in the artist's oeuvre.

GROSSES BLUMENBOUQUET IN ANTIKISIERENDER VASE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 130,5 x 75,2 cm. Unten mittig signiert. In plastisch dekoriertem Rahmen. Der Maler war Schüler seines Vaters und weiterer Meister der Dordrechter Schule. 20-jährig zog er nach Paris, wo er sich an Werken des Malers van Bloemen orientierte. In Folge beauftragt von der Großherzogin von Russland für Werke für das Pawlowsk in Sankt Petersburg. Auf einer starken Steinplatte, die auch als Hintergrundfolie für die Signatur dient, eine reliefierte gefußte antikisierende Vase mit flankierenden Früchten wie Trauben, Ananas und Pfirsich. Ein Blumenbouquet, das kompositionell eine aufstrebende Diagonale bildet, wird aus Rosen, Tulpen, Narzissen, Hortensien und Blüten weiterer Blumen gebildet. Rest. Germania, 1753 ; 1825 Vaso con fiori e cesto di frutta su un tavolo Firmato V Leen in basso a destra Olio su tela, cm 31X25 Il padre di Willem van Leen gestiva un atelier di pittura, per questo inizio ad appassionarsi all arte sin da bambino. Dopo essersi allenato con suo padre, Willem apprese da altri eccellenti pittori di Dordrecht. All'età di vent'anni partì per Parigi, dove si dedicì alla pittura di fiori. La Granduchessa di Russia gli commissionì la progettazione di una carta da parati di seta bianca cinese per il Palazzo Pavlovsk a Leningrado. Nonostante la Rivoluzione francese, continuì a vivere e lavorare a Parigi in seguito si stabilì a Delfshaven. Le sue nature morte sono conosciute a livello internazionale e apprezzate pe la qualità eccellente nel descrivere ogni singolo fiore con dovizia di particolari.

Willem van Leen was one of a number of gifted Dutch artists who worked and studied in Paris in the late 18th century. There he was influenced by his friendship with the Dutch painter Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King of France, and Redoutes instructor. Despite the older artists support and influence, van Leens work exhibits a distinctive character. In Great Flower Painters, Peter Mitchell describes van Leens oils on panel as his finest works, admirable for their delicate palate and remarkable softness of touch. In this small and engaging composition, van Leen embellishes the classic botanical still-life composition with the addition of a small dragon-fly. Van Leens Still-Life with Roses... is a fine and delicate painting by a master flower painter. Van Leens paintings are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England
