Original Pen and Watercolor illustration by Harry Hanson Lees (1888 - c. 1960).The illustration shows King Ethelred the Nasty Tempered. Signed by the artist and with a hand written caption that reads “He won’t smoke old brass and he won’t take his cough meddy”. Framed and matted under glass. Frame measures 11 1/2x14 ½ and image is 9x6. PROVENANCE: The Estate of American Illustrator & Artist R. John Holmgren. Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, he attended the Cleveland School of Art, Cleveland Institute and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York.
