Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: The kangaroo boxer was a real sensation at the Nouveau Cirque from roughly the 1890s to early 1900s. In 1906, the scientific journal La Vulgarisation scientifique wrote, “It was not a question of explaining to a kangaroo the rules of human boxing; the trick is much simpler. Simply wrap the front paws in big mittens, like those who play this sport, and you have your boxer kangaroo. The mittens, in fact, annoy the beast, which feels its trapped paws there, and it will struggle with fury, simulating for the public attacks and boxing retorts... The mittens also have the advantage of protecting man against the terrible scratches of the animal, which would tear his face. A bit of skillful staging completes the whole thing. But does not the kangaroo get used to wearing mittens in the long run, and will it not stop gesticulating, one day or another? No, because on the contrary, this action gradually becomes inseparable for him from the mittens he wears; the punches with which his trainer threatens his muzzle and stomach, and which he feels he cannot defend himself, are there, moreover, to maintain this gesticulation which makes the spectators happy.” (Art Nouveau; Sports; Animals)

Condition B+ / A-: minor repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; small replaced loss in upper right corner. Two-sheets. Lefèvre, along with Georges Meunier, Lucien Baylac and René Péan, was one of Jules Chéret''s disciples who all worked as part of the creative team at the Chaix printing plant. Such a stable of impressive artists gave Chaix the opportunity to line up major accounts to try and replicate Chéret''s successes. Electricine, a manufacturer of lamp oil, is a good example. One of Chéret''s biggest accounts was Saxoleine, which precluded him from designing advertisements for competing products. So, the account was passed on to Lefèvre and Baylac, who could advertise the product in the style of Chéret without any conflict of interest; this image really does replicate Chéret''s style, with the colors, the drawing and the use of the vertical format all being classic components of the Chéret school. Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format. This charming image was designed by Lucien Lefevre ( 1850 - ?) to promote the Cirage Jacquot & Cie brand of shoe polish. This poster was created during the heyday of circus performances, and the image portrays one clown painting the other's face with the Jacquot brand of shoe polish. This is an original vintage poster, not a reproduction . This poster is on heavyweight paper, and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

It was sold in Paris for 2.50 francs for one month's subscription, (4 Maitres) and for 27 francs for 12 months (48 maitres), plus special (bonus) plates. Maitre's were never issued in a book form, but a binding of the 12 months Maitres was offered to subscribers, at the end of the year, with a beautiful hardcover design by Paul Berthon for 8 Francs. The ""Maitres de l'Affiche,"" were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as ""plates"" (PL). They were numbered, with the printers name ""Imprimerie Chaix,"" in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, ""PL.1"" to ""PL.240."" In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret's.

This first edition, folio lithograph after a poster is from Les Maitres de l'Affiche. The work was published by Imprimerie Chaix under the direction of Jules Cheret in Paris between 1896 and 1900. The prints were published as a monthly subscription, with 4 sent each month to subscribers. On 16 occasions "bonus" plates of original designs by noted artists were also included. Each lithograph features the blind embossed stamp of Maitres de l'Affiche designed by Cheret. Celebrated artists of the time contributed to the work including Steinlen, Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Forain, Grasset, Meunier, Louis Rhead, Dudley Hardy, Beggarstaff, Edward Penfield et al. Jules Cheret was considered the father of poster art. "He dominated the series, with one in every four Maitres by him, the first in each monthly instalment, and 7 of the Special plates, a total of 67. With over 1000 poster designs to his credit, his large representation in the series is justified, although some critics have pointed out that, as the artistic director, he may have been biased towards selecting his own work." (Appelbaum p.iii) Cheret demonstrated a unique combination of artistic, technical, and entrepreneurial talent that spearheaded the poster industry. He opened his own print shop in 1866 in Paris and from 1881 on his shop operated as part of the Chaix firm which gave us Les Maitres de l'Affiche. Among the most sought after plates in the work are the "Job" and "Moulin Rouge" by Toulouse Lautrec. Rennert noted of the "Job" by Mucha that "more than any other work of Mucha's, this beauty established him as the master of convoluted hair and the creator of unforgettable popular images; the poster was used for years in many variants all over the world, sometimes with marginal text in various languages. A classic by any standard." (Rennert, PAI-XLIX 389) "Jane Abdy called it "a secular icon," and indeed it is a magnificent production, considering that it advertises cigarette paper. "The background, in a dull imperial purple is a perfect foil for the golden curls of the smoking girl, whose locks are spread over the poster like the delicate filigree work of an Indian bracelet"(Abdy, p.136) This art subscription was created during the Belle Epoque period in France. "There was nothing exclusive about the 'joie de vivre' that swept Paris, at a delirious pace, out of the 19th century into the 20th. As Victor Hugo had observed, the city lived by, and for, the whole human race. Haussman's great boulevards had opened up a spacious stage where Paris made a spectacle of herself by day and night. Outdoors and indoors the walls of buildings flowered with posters that took their themes from the passing show of 'La Vie Parisenne.' Advertising never knew happier days. The most ephemeral of the arts has left us with a vision of the 'good old days' that vanished forever in the gunsmoke of 1914. Those gay nineties and naughty noughts that will always be remembered as 'La Belle Epoque.'(The beautiful era)" (Horizon p. 97) "By the 1890s the streets of every great metropolis were enlivened by large colourful posters (see The Great Poster Movement). The poster had not only caught the fancy of the broad public, but its best examples were already being regarded as works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reprinted in a manageable form. In the last five years of the century, the Imprimerie Chaix was to play great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient period of 'La Belle Epoque.' It was in those years that the firm published Les Maitres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) reduced lithographic versions, in authentic colours, of the best posters of Europe and America, by more than 90 great artists, posters that bring the period to life."
