Gwen Le Gallienne,  French/British c.1898-1966 -  A Private Discussion;  oil on canvas, signed low

        Est: £600 - £800

Gwen Le Gallienne,  French/British c.1898-1966 -  A Private Discussion;  oil on canvas, signed lower left 'Gwen le Galliene', 61 x 51 cm (ARR) Note: a painter and sculptor, Le Gallienne was a celebrated figure, known somewhat scandalously for her reported same-sex love affairs with figures including the feminist activist Louise Bryant and Yvette Ledoux. The present work recalls Rococo scenes and is also reminiscent of French painter Marie Laurencin's work, another artist who cultivated a highly feminised and nostalgic aesthetic in the interwar period. During the Second World War the artist applied to the WAAC to go to France, but according to the Imperial War Museum Archive, she was not employed by the committee.
