Fernand Léger Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer, Illustrator, Draft draughtsman, b. 1881 - d. 1955

(b Argentan, France, 1881; d Gif-sur-Yevtt, France, 1955) French painter. Fernand Léger was initially trained as an architect from 1897 to 1899. After his military service in Versailles in 1902-1903, he enrolled at the School of Decorative art, and attended classes at the Beaux-Arts. By age of 25, he began working as a serious painter, and his artwork showed a strong influence of Impressionism. When Léger saw the post-Impressionist compositions at Cézanne's memorial exhibition in 1907, he was astonished by how the artist could reveal the geometry inherent in the body. By 1912, the grip of Cézanne's influence had reached its intensity, propelling Léger into a creative exorcism for the sake of his more avant-garde aspirations. Léger has been associated with various avant-garde movement in Europe in the 20th century, he was one of the first artists who captured the watershed moment when he pushed beyond figuration, an idiosyncratic version of Picasso and Braque’s cubist gesture described by critic, Louis Vauxcelles, as “Tubism” in 1911. In each successful painting, Léger addresses this dichotomy of modernity versus tradition, varying the level of description from picture to picture, and each picture is part of a continuum that illustrated the artist's aesthetic concept at a given point. A FERNAND LEGER, FRENCH, OIL ON BOARD ABSTRACT PAINTING, 1917 ATTR

                      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Attributed to Fernand Leger, an oil on board abstract painting. Signed "F.L." and dated 1917 lower left. Fernand Leger (1881-1955) was a French artist, sculptor, ceramist, and art educator, known as one of the major Cubist painters. Leger originally studied to be a retoucher of photographs and an architect's draughtsman. When Leger switched to painting, he first worked in a style influenced by Impressionism before destroying most of the work of this period. In 1907, after seeing the painting of Paul Cezanne at the Salon d'Automne, he adopted a more geometrical style. Soon Leger was considered one of the country's three major Cubist painters along with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Please make all inquiries before bidding. Original vintage exhibition advertising poster for an exhibiton by Fernand Leger (1881-1955), a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. Having regarded to be a forerunner of pop art, his early works he created a personal form of cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. The exhibition was held from May to June 1962, at 70 Rue de L'Universite, Paris - the gallery of Heinz Berggruen, a collector and dealer who played a major role in the post-World War Two reception and dissemination of European modern art, and more specifically, of Pablo Picasso. The poster features a Leger painting dated from 1913. Toward the end of 1912, Leger made among the most defiantly abstract works yet seen. Over the next two years he worked intensely in this experimental idiom, producing the fifty or so canvases, and twice as many works on paper, that constitute his Contrastes de formes (Contrasts of forms) series. Very good condition, minor creasing, minor staining. Country of issue: France, designer: Fernand Leger, size (cm): 60x45, year of printing: 1962.

(French, 1881-1955) Design for Tapis No. 9, Rouge, design conceived circa 1927, unsigned, collotype, sheet 8-1/8 x 4-5/8 in.; gilt wood frame, 15-1/4 x 8-1/8 x 1-3/4 in. Provenance: Private Collection Note: "Fernand Leger (French, 1881 - 1955), like Picasso, Braque, Miro and others, was one of the artists who contributed paintings to Marie Cuttoli to be woven in tapestries in the 1920s. In the 1930s and 1940s Leger continued to work with weavers, notably the Aubusson atelier of Tabard Freres et Soeurs, which is now extinct. In the 1950s artist Victor Vasarely who had worked with French gallerist Densie Rene persuaded Leger to join him, Jean Arp, Le Corbusier, Wassily Kandinsky and other artists to join him in creating tapestry editions of their images for the gallery. Leger also worked with Rene and Jacqueline de la Baume Durrbach, who wove tapestries for their friend Picasso as part of his arrangement with Nelson Rockefeller. Leger's widow, the former Nadia Khodossievitch, a tireless promoter of the artist's work after his death, commissioned tapestries after Leger's images working with several notable weavers including Yvette Cauquil-Prince, Suzanne Goubley and various ateliers including Pinton and Tabard Freres et Soeurs. Many of these tapestries were donated to the Musee National Fernand Leger in Biot, France, which Nadia Leger created with George Bauquier and to other museums. The Leger estate has remained active in tapestry and has continued to allow re-editions of older tapestries, notably several commissioned by New York gallerist Jane Kahan starting in about 2000 and woven by atelier Pinton. Fernand Leger also was responsible for the primary designs for the rugs - termed "tapis" in French - that Marie Cuttoli sold at her fashionable Paris shop even before she began working with tapestry."
