Legrands Stundenbuch ist eines der herausragenden Schöpfungen französischer Buchillustration des Fin de siècle. Der aus dem Spätmittelalter überkommene Typus des Gebet- und Andachtsbuches wird darin in einzigartiger Weise für den Jugendstil adaptiert. Der als Pastellmaler, Zeichner und Druckgraphiker berühmt gewordene Louis Legrand wurde als Auguste Mathieu 1863 in Dijon geboren und starb in Livry-Gargan. Er war Schüler an der École des Beaux-Arts in seiner Heimatstadt und studierte später bei Félicien Rops in Paris. Als Mitarbeiter großer illustrierter Zeitschriften war er häufiger Gast auf dem Montmartre, wo er Menschen aller sozialen Schichten portraitierte und leicht erotisch anmutende Pastelle und Radierungen schuf. Die Frauenkörper in diesem Stundenbuch sind ein schönes Beispiel hierfür. Auch als Buchillustrator (vor allem von Werken Guy de Maupassants und Paul D'Argens') erlangte er Anerkennung. Vortitel mit kleinem Exlibris (Jacques Crépineau). – In bestem Erhaltungszustand.

Copy number one printed for Henri Prost with original signed pastel drawings, a signed suite of first states, two copperplates and bound by Georges Cretté. From the edition limited to 142 copies, with this, copy number one, one of four from the édition de tête on Japon with the additional suite also on Japon with each etching signed in pencil by Legrand. This copy also has a duplicate of one of the plates which is dedicated to Henri Prost in pencil and a further plate is also inscribed to Henri Prost. In addition, bound-in at the rear of the volume, are 7 letters in the hand of Legrand, all to Prost concerning the production of the book. The final inclusion is a full-page leaf of manuscript, a critique of the book for the 'Journal des Débats' and dated '10 Janvier 1932", presented by its author 'Bormans': 'Pour mon excellent Ami, Prost'.
