Condition B+: small creases and abrasions at edges; slight scuffing in image; small pin holes in corners and top and bottom edges. Mounted on Chartex. Leighton was best known for her wood engravings and woodblock prints, especially those focused on rural life in the countryside. She is only known to have designed two posters, both for the London Transport; they were published a year before she immigrated to the United States.

          Clare Veronica Hope Leighton (1898-1989) Breaking Camp 1931 The wood engraving from Claire Leighton's Canadian Lumber Camp Series is numbered 94 from an edition of 100 prints. The artist has signed the work in pencil below the image lower right and titled the print lower left. This image is one of six different compositions documenting the work of Canadian workers living and harvesting timber in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec where Claire Leighton camped alongside lumberjacks during the winter of 1930-31. She, like many artists during the Great Depression, sought to document and glorify the noble toil common workers. Image measures 9 x 13, sheet is 10.5 x 15 with a framed size of 18.75 x 22.75 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. In the 1930s the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway used this image with the slogan ‘Sleep like a Kitten’ and named the character ‘Chessie’. Chessie became a hugely popular image, appearing on calendars, clothing and children's books. Most famously Chessie was used to promote WW2 War Bonds and support for the War Efforts.

Wood engraving on Japan paper, signed, titled and numbered 35 of an edition of 50 in pencil in the bottom margin, a nice impression, matted and framed, 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. Leighton is best known for her vivid wood engravings, often depicting rural work as in this bucolic image. Seated on the steps of a small shed, a farmer offers a new lamb milk from a bottle while a boy looks on. In the foreground sit a contented pile of ewes and infant lambs, while the shadowy sheepdog keeps watch. Fletcher 22.
