Harry Leith-Ross Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Water color painter, Painter, Illustrator, b. 1886 - d. 1973

Born in 1886 in Mauritius, painter Harry Leith-Ross formed the basis of his artistic education in the United States, France, and England while attending schools like Academie Julien, the Royal Academy, and the National Academy of Design. He eventually moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania, and many Harry Leith-Ross prints portray the town and its surrounding landscapes. In New Hope, an art colony, Leith-Ross worked with artists like Birge Harrison and William Langson Lathrop. As he experimented with styles, Harry Leith-Ross paintings revealed the artist's exploration of realism, watercolor, and light.

Many Harry Leith-Ross prints capture humble subjects such as farms, small town roads, and nautical scenes. Leith-Ross has been a widely celebrated artist since his initiation into the art world, and Harry Leith-Ross paintings for sale are valuable pieces for collectors. Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Harry Leith-Ross (American, 1886-1973) Sully's Lane Oil on canvas 25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm) Signed lower left: Leith-Ross Signed and titled on the reverse: Sully's Lane / Leith-Ross PROVENANCE: Private collection, Illinois and Michigan; By descent in the family through two generations to the present owner, Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In Harry Leith-Ross' Sully's Lane, a bright sunny day shows off a fresh snowfall. This lushly-painted oil belongs to that magical period of American art (circa 1900 through the 1930s), when some of the most gifted landscapists tuned their attention to recording what American winters looked like—both in the city and in the countryside—on canvases of ambitious size. Winterscapes became a stunning new subject for American oil painters, offering an opportunity to create imagery with a kind of chromatic and graphic power that quickly captured the attention of critics and collectors alike. Today their efforts have become among the most coveted American landscapes of the early 20th century. Coming immediately to mind are George Bellows' immensely muscular scenes along with Hudson with blankets of thick snow, freezing swaths of shadow and puffs of smoke piercing the frigid air. Childe Hassam's painted lavender snowstorms engulfing New York high rises, his thin flickering brushstrokes evoking blasts of wind carrying swirling flakes into the faces of pedestrians. Rockwell Kent's winter scenes show architectonic slabs of white, yellow and ultramarine ice in frigid places only some solitary American Superman would be brave enough to explore. In the hands of painters such as Aldro Hubbard, William Launt Palmer, William Metcalf, Birge Harrison, and the latter's gifted student Harry Leith-Ross, winter was interpreted with a dazzling lyricism and poetry, and focused on quieter country vistas where creeks cut through snow banks and an iridescent winter light playing on ice became the protagonist of their work. A precise draftsman and superb colorist, Harry Leith-Ross, is best-known today as a member of the Woodstock art colony and a Pennsylvania Impressionists associated with the New Hope School. He exhibited both in New York and Boston, with Doll & Richards, Macbeth Galleries, Feragil Galleries, and Grand Central Art Galleries, and at the North Shore Art Association in Gloucester, where he also taught. He was an inspiring teacher, and wrote a well-regarded practical book on landscape painting derived from his extensive personal experience at the easel as well as from his teaching ( The Landscape Painter's Manual, Watson-Guptill Publications, New York, 1956) . Born on the island of Mauritius in the South Indian Ocean, Harry Leith-Ross was born into a distinguished family with notable political and artistic ties. His Scottish father was a banker with the Oriental bank, and his Dutch mother, daughter of liberal politician Samuel van Houten, was the niece of Hendrik Willem Mesdag, the admired Dutch marine artist who, together with his painter-wife, Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, was responsible for the magnificent Mesdag Panorama at Scheveningen near The Hague. (Additionally, a distant cousin was Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.) The Mesdags fostered young Leith-Ross' love of art which had a lasting impact on the direction of his life and career. Although he was educated in England and Scotland, and studied engineering at the University of Birmingham for a year, Harry Leith-Ross soon discovered his passions lay elsewhere. At the age of 17 he emigrated to the United States where he worked for a year in his uncle's coal company and then did some advertising work in Denver. In 1909 he began his artistic training in earnest, first training at private academies in Paris and then studying in New York at the National Academy of Design School. However, it was the experience of attending the
