ELEANOR NEEDHAM (UM 1627 - 1663/64), LADY BYRON, ALS HEILIGE KATHARINA VON ALEXANDRIEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 129 x 102 cm. Plaque with the name of the sitter and the artist at the lower edge of the frame. The painting on offer for sale in this lot continues the stylistic and formal characteristics of the eponymous work by Peter Lely from 1663-1664, which is now held at the Tabley House Collection. However, the Tabley version also features two putti in the top left area and an open book on the floor.

Attributed to Peter Lely (Soest, Germany 1618 - London 1680) "Portrait of the renowned English composer Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695)" Oil on canvas. 42.5 x 31 cm. An important portrait executed during the musician's lifetime, which makes it a highly exceptional piece. The National Portrait Gallery in London has a portrait of Henry Purcell in its collection, attributed to John Closterman or his workshop, circa 1695. (https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw05172/Henry-Purcell?LinkID=mp03677&role=sit&rNo=2) In addition to the evident pictorial characteristics typical of the brilliant Lely, the historical context is also interesting to examine: John Blow (1649 - 1708), who was Henry Purcell's teacher, was painted by Peter Lely at the approximate age of 30. It seems logical that Blow turned to the Master Lely to request that he, the best portraitist in England at the time, paint his pupil Purcell, who appears to be about 20 years old in this portrait. Sir Peter Lely was a renowned painter and art collector during the Restoration era in England. He was known for his portraits of court ladies and admirals, specialising in portraying the ladies of high-society as languid and voluptuous women. He began his career as a painter of landscapes and historical compositions but soon realised that portraits were more lucrative and shifted his focus. His skill in this genre earned him recognition and he became the "best painter in England." As well as being a successful painter, he was also a passionate art collector. His collection included works by prominent Venetian painters such as Veronese, Bassano, and Tintoretto, as well as European artists like Van Dyck, Claude Lorrain, Rubens, and other Dutch and Flemish painters. Lely was inspired by the Dutch pictorial style and reflected the spirit and character of its subjects in his works. Throughout his career, Lely emphasized the artificial elegance of his subjects, having them adopt similar poses and eliminating any distinctions between them. His legacy as a painter and collector left a remarkable imprint on the art world. After his death, his collection was sold and it also included artworks by Van Dyck, Claude Lorrain, Rubens, and various Dutch and Flemish landscapists. Lely was the first English painter to have a large studio, and his portraits were imitated by other artists until the mid-18th century. Henry Purcell (Westminster, England, 1659 - 1695) was an important English Baroque composer. He incorporated French and Italian stylistic elements into his music, creating a distinctive English style of Baroque music. He is considered one of the most significant composers of all time.  As we read on the LAPhil website by conductor Gustavo Dudamel: "Henry Purcell is, arguably, England’s most famous composer. The son of a court musician, organist of Westminster Abbey at a mere 20 years of age, and the recipient of royal appointments by three different kings, he is considered one of the most original and prodigious composers of his – or any – time. Although he incorporated French and Italian elements into his writing, his compositions would come to define the English Baroque style. Purcell’s relatively short life produced a broad repertoire, including sacred music, theatre music and opera, fantasies and sonatas for keyboard, and vocal and chamber music – much of which endures in popularity and recognition to this day." Provenance: Important Spanish private collection. The painting has always been attributed to the artist Peter Lely (1618 - 1680) through the various generations that inherited it. Circle of PETER LELY (1618-1680); England, last third of the 17th century. "Portrait of a Gentleman. Oil on canvas. Re-drawn in the 19th century. Size: 77 x 66 cm. In this panel the artist offers us a male portrait of great psychological depth, sparing in accessory effects and endowed with deep expressiveness. The format, as well as the sitter's clothing, are typical of the genre of 17th-century portraiture. Thus, we see the bust-length figure in the foreground, standing out against a neutral, dark background, directly illuminated by a light that falls on his face and leaves the rest in semi-darkness, creating an expressive play of light and shadow on which the painter relies to model the facial features. Aesthetically the work is very close to the painting of Peter Lely who, although of Dutch origin, spent most of his career in England, where he became the dominant court portraitist. He became a naturalised British subject and was knighted in 1679. Lely studied painting in Haarlem, where he may have been apprenticed to Pieter de Grebber, and became master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1637. He arrived in London around 1643. His early English paintings, mainly religious mythological scenes, or portraits set in a pastoral landscape, show influences of Anthony van Dyck and the Dutch Baroque. Lely's portraits were well received and he succeeded Anthony van Dyck. As the most fashionable portraitist in England. He became a freeman of the Painter-Stainers' Company in 1647 and was portrait painter to Charles I. His talent ensured that his career was not interrupted by Charles's execution, and he served Oliver Cromwell. There may be thousands of these portraits, ranging from rare first-rate originals, often of astonishing quality, to crude studio replicas by assistants trained to imitate Lely's style. Lely played an important role in the introduction of mezzotint in Britain, realising its potential for publicising his portraits.

Sir Peter (Pieter) Lely British, (1618 - 1680) Child portrait of a Girl in blue dress with flowers in an oval oil on canvas Unsigned. Biography from the archives of AskArt: His real name was van der Faes, but Peter Lely took his nickname after a family home with a lily on its gable. Born in Germany to Dutch parents, by 1637 he was Pieter Lely at the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem, where he trained. Ten years later he was in London, where he painted landscapes, religious scenes, and history pictures but quickly recognized the strength of the market in portraiture. Working for many of the late Anthony van Dyck's patrons, Lely took the opportunity to study his predecessor's paintings carefully. He incorporated van Dyck's sense of scale, shimmering handling of paint, and repertoire of design and accessories with his own impeccable drawing and Dutch qualities of rich color, dramatic lighting, and romantic landscape. In 1661 Lely became the Principal Painter of the restored English monarchy; he succeeded in capturing the court's sensuous languor and also assembled one of England's finest art collections. For years Lely had no serious rivals, and he was enormously influential. Demand was overwhelming, and his studio was a well-oiled machine; by 1670 he had numbered his poses. After painting the sitter's head from life, Lely's contribution ranged from completing the entire portrait to simply handing it over to assistants. He died at his easel of an apoplectic fit, possibly caused by overwork. Source: http://www.getty.edu/art/gettyguide/artMakerDetails?maker=222&page=1
