HENRI LEMAIRE (1879-1949). INAUGURATION DU PORT DE BRUXELLES / CIRCUIT DES 3 FLEUVES. 1914. 35½x22¾ inches, 90x57¾ cm. Gouweloos Frere

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

HENRI LEMAIRE (1879-1949) INAUGURATION DU PORT DE BRUXELLES / CIRCUIT DES 3 FLEUVES. 1914. 35 1/2x22 3/4 inches, 90x57 3/4 cm. Gouweloos Frere & Soeur, Brussels. Condition B+: replaced losses in upper right margin; repaired tears and creases in margins and image. Framed. "Under the auspices of the city of Brussels, L'Aero-Club de Belgique scheduled a contest for hydro-aeroplanes and hydrofoils for what proved to be the fateful summer of 1914. As part of the inaugural ceremonies involved opening the port of Brussels on the River Escaut, a competition was to have taken place over the circuit of three rivers: Escaut, Rhine and Meuse. But, the affair was hastily canceled when war broke out in August and Belgium was overrun by the German army" (Looping The Loop p. 106). The event most likely would have been quite special, as the poster illustrates some of the finest flying boats of the early aviation era. "In the foreground is a close approximation of a Maurice Farman biplane taking off. Unmistakably, in the air above is a Voisin Canard, while in the rear are what seem to be a Borel monoplane on floats and a Donnet-Lévêque flying boat" (ibid). In addition to the incredible flying machines, the poster also portrays an early fan boat, and what improbably appears to be some form of jet-ski. Looping the Loop pl. 67, British Aviation p. 25.

    • Circuit des 3 Fleuves. 1914.
      Feb. 25, 2018

      Circuit des 3 Fleuves. 1914.

      Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Artist: HENRI LEMAIRE (1879-1949) Size: 22 3/8 x 34 3/4 in./56.8 x 88.3 cm Gouweloos Frère & Soeur, Bruxelles The inland port of Brussels has been inaugurated several times – once in the 16th century, once in the 19th century – and it indeed would have made an ideal landing strip for seaplanes. But this event never happened. Despite Lemaire's brilliant photorealistic illustration of the state of the art in "hydroaéroplanes et de bateaux glisseurs," the Port of Brussels was never inaugurated with an aviators' contest. That's because some five weeks before the date of the event, Germany invaded Belgium and began World War I. This poster is, therefore, a true fiction. The Port of Brussels finally enjoyed a 20th century inauguration in 1922. (Aviation; Travel; Event)
