Reference: Lotz-Brissonneau 147. Impression aside from the small edition published by the first "Estampe Originale", Paris. The printing on Lepere's typical tissue-thin paper (japon pelure) suggests that this impression was made by him. Image size: 6 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches.

              Auguste LEPERE: "Fin de Journee"

              Est: $150 - $200

Auguste LEPERE (French, 1849-1918): "Fin de Journee". Woodcut printed in two tones (from two blocks) on laid paper made for the artist himself, with AL snail watermark, 1908. Reference: Texier-Bernier 518 (sometimes also referred to as "Saunier"). Third state of four according to T-B, sometimes erroneously referred to as a first state because of Lepere’s own annotation. The first and second states are however impressions of only one block, respectively the black and the brown only. Before further work and eventual publication in "L’Art et les Artistes", in the fourth and final state. Edition of 365 in this state, scarce. Signed, annotated "1er Etat" and numbered in pencil. With the drystamps of Edmond Sagot, Paris (Lugt 2254). It is probable that the stamp was apposed by the dealer because he sold this impression, not because he published this edition. Image size: 8 7/8 x 6 1/8 inches.
