Ludovic-Napoleon Lepic (17 December 1839 Ã¢â¬â 27 October 1889) was a French artist, archaeologist and patron of the arts. He was styled as Vicomte Lepic until his father's death in 1875, when he succeeded to the title of Comte Lepic. He is best remembered today as a friend of Edgar Degas, who included him in some eleven paintings and pastels. He was among the original Impressionist group and later became a recognised marine painter. Follower of Degas, Ludovic Lepic was best known for his paintings of water scenes with windmill houses which this painting falls right into that category. Parigi, 1839 - 1889 Riflessi di luce tra gli alberi in Camargue Firmato Lepic, iscrizione Berot e data 1878 in basso a sinistra Olio su tela, cm 122X210 La natura é per il pittore fonte d'ispirazione e soggetto principale nella grande tela. In questo bellissimo dipinto Lepic realizza un'inquadratura di grande respiro, dove l'occhio dell'osservatore, spinto dal taglio orizzontale della veduta, corre veloce tra i volumi dei tronchi nodosi degli alberi fino al limitare del bosco- qui si scorge un abbozzato paesaggio marino con velieri e piccole figurine. L'artista appare molto attratto dai mobili giochi luminosi che si creano all'interno del sottobosco: dimostrando una rara sapienza compositiva e cromatica. Pittore, costumista, scultore e incisore molto apprezzato, Loudovic Hippolite Lepic fu un aristocratico francese che amava l'arte piuttosto che la carriera militare pur essendo figlio e nipote di militari- archeologo dilettante e appassionato marinaio, amante dei cani e dei cavalli e al tempo stesso un uomo di città, molto amico di Edgar Degas. Tra loro nacque, infatti, una profonda e sincera amicizia, che portò Degas ad interpretare la figura di Lepic in undici opere nel corso della carriera artistica. Avendo mostrato interesse per l'arte in giovanissima età il padre di Lepic, organizzò lezioni private con due artisti belgi che lavoravano a Parigi, Gustaf Wappers e Charles Verlat da cui il giovane artista apprese l'arte dell'incisione. Creò la sua prima incisione rilevante nel 1860 con una tecnica che ebbe una grande influenza sulla moderna tecnica dell incisione. Nel 1862 fu invitato ad unirsi alla Sociètè des Aqua-fortistes e in seguito entrò nell'…cole des Beaux-Arts per studiare con il pittore accademico Alexandre Cabanel. Il suo amico Degas l'invitò ad unirsi ad altri quindici artisti per formare un'associazione per sponsorizzare mostre indipendenti, portando alla prima esposizione impressionista nel 1874, sette opere tra acquerelli e incisioni. Ha esposto opere alla mostra impressionista del 1876, con oltre quaranta opere elencate nel catalogo. Vinse una medaglia al Salon del 1877 e fece mostre personali nel 1879 e nel 1883, quest'ultima una grande retrospettiva, dove erano presenti molti acquerelli realizzati durante un viaggio in Egitto del 1882.
